CHRISTIAN PIRATE RADIOTM NAMED #2 RADIO STATION ON THE INTERNET

Bookmark and Share
LOS ANGLES, Calif. - May 17, 2000 -- Christian Pirate RadioTM, www.mycpr.com, is the second most listened to radio station on the Internet, according to Arbitron, which just released its latest InfoStream ratings for January 2000.

During that month, Christian Pirate RadioTM, an Internet-only station, had 81,000 unique listeners visit its site at www.mycpr.com. It is the only Christian music station in Arbitron's Top 25 stations, and one of only two Internet-only stations. Virgin Radio, www.virginradio.co.uk, ranked number one.

"We've known that the audience for Christian Pirate RadioTM has been exploding, and these rankings are confirmation. We are thrilled and grateful to be the second most popular radio station of any kind of music on the web. That's pretty amazing," said Dave Armstrong, general manager.

"The fact that Internet-only audiocaster, Christian Pirate RadioTM , is one of the top channels in the January InfoStream ratings illustrates, once again, that consumers are listening to webcast programming that they cannot find on traditional broadcast stations," said Joan FitzGerald, director of marketing, Arbitron Internet Information Services in the company's official press announcement.

According to Armstrong, Christian Pirate RadioTM uses three primary approaches to building its listenership. Christian Pirate RadioTM is cross-promoted on www.OnePlace.com, which is owned by its parent company Salem Communications Corporation, and by working with Christian music labels and their websites. Additionally, the Internet station markets to a substantial email list that it generates from listener referrals.

"The Internet has a unique advantage of almost instantly multiplying its impact just by asking a visitor to share the website with some of his or her friends. That has been integral to our success, and we believe we've created a compelling and entertaining site. It's a great value, both for our listeners and our advertisers," Armstrong said.

The January ratings compiled listening estimates for more than 1,000,000 unique listeners. This report included 315 channels of audio programming offered by 15 participating streaming media services. Arbitron, which has been measuring radio audiences for more than 50 years, introduced InfoStream, America's first webcast ratings service last year.

Christian Pirate RadioTM broadcasts through RealBroadcast Networks and was established in 1997 to fill a void in major markets that did not have a major Christian music station, according to Armstrong. The station has live disc jockeys and its core artists include dcTalk, Jars of Clay, Steven Curtis Chapman, Supertones, Newsboys, Jennifer Knapp, Caedmon's Call, Crystal Lewis, Michael W. Smith and Audio Adrenaline. The Pirate in the name refers to its radically different delivery method via the Internet and the programming philosophy of playing independent artists, new artists, alternative, modern rock, and contemporary Christian music.

Christian Pirate RadioTM is part of Salem Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: SALM), the leading provider of radio, electronic and printed resources targeted to the Christian market. Upon the close of all pending transactions, Salem Communications will own 70 radio stations in the United States. Salem also owns the Salem Radio Network, CCM Communications and OnePlace, Ltd.
