San Francisco, CA December 8, 2005 —On Saturday, December 31, Bay Area Afrobeat and World Music fans are encouraged to wear their dancing shoes and shake it so kids in Kashmir can make it at the Elbo Room. The night will feature gritty, hard-hitting, and ripping, dance music from Sila and the Afrofunk Experience. Partial Proceeds from the event will be donated to Save the Children Fund for Kids in Kashmir. The band is also asking for donations of warm clothes, blankets and jackets.

In 2005, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience donated over $5000 from various concerts to needy children in the US (Katrina), Pakistan and Darfur, Sudan. Sila, who is an outspoken advocate for peace and children’s rights, also produces the Afrofunk Music Festival, which raises awareness and funds for children affected by war, hunger and AIDS in Africa.

THE CAUSE

October 8's magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the South Asian subcontinent on a Saturday morning at 8:50 a.m. local time (8:50 p.m. PST Friday). The epicenter was about 60 miles north-northeast of Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.

The impact of the earthquake on children in the area has been particularly devastating. UNICEF reports that between 1.6 and 2.2 million have been affected, with most in desperate need of shelter, protection, food, medical care, and other necessities. More than 17,000 were killed, tens of thousands injured, and surviving children witnessed the horrors of classmates, parents, or relatives killed or injured.
