Celebrated Engineer Manny Marroquin Mixes New Alicia Keys Unplugged Project On SSL AWS 900 Console At The Oven Studios
Grammy Award winning engineer Manny Marroquin was invited to mix the new Alicia Keys project on a Solid State Logic AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System at Keys' new facility, The Oven Studios. The sterling audio quality of the AWS 900 and functional control of the Pro Tools system at the studio yielded a mix that will become Alicia Keys third major release. "The original recording for Alicia's "MTV UnPlugged" session was made at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Harvey Theater with 14 performers that was essentially a live to tape session," says Marroquin. "I mixed the "Unplugged" session for about three weeks at The Oven on the AWS 900, and the console performed wonderfully. This is the first time I had used the AWS 900 and I quickly realized that it gave me all the depth of sound of the XL 9000 K Series Console. This AWS 900 is simply amazing." The transition on this session for Marroquin from working a full-blown XL 9000 K to the more compact AWS 900 was a matter of creating a fitting workflow model for the AWS. "The AWS 900 interfaces with the Pro Tools system and provides the control I need to mix the session," explains Marroquin. "The AWS 900 has 24 faders that conveniently control both console and Pro Tools, so I developed a mix strategy using both the capabilities on Pro Tools and the SSL. The sessions went smoothly and the console's results were great." According to Marroquin, he took the horn section, mixed it down in Pro Tools to stereo and brought the stereo track through the AWS 900. In this way, he maximized the available mixing capabilities, while imparting the sonic qualities of the SuperAnalogue signal path found on the AWS 900. "I love the EQ on the AWS 900," states Marroquin. "The SSL engineers really did a great job delivering the 9000 K EQ section to the AWS 900 and that allowed me to use the board to process sounds rather than using outboard gear. We did the Luther Vandros song, If This World Were Mine, which was tracked and mixed at The Oven. Once again, the console sounded great. The AWSomation automation system really brings major league performance to the smaller facility and makes the AWS 900 a way cool tool for producing hit tracks."
