David Bowie Makes Triumphant Return To The Stage
Generating such accolades as he "made a triumphant return to the stage on Thursday night" (The Mirror, U.K) and "Bowie's stylishness proved it has staying power" (Rollingstone.com), DAVID BOWIE upped the ante when he performed at the all-star television special "Fashion Rocks" Thursday night at New York City's Radio City Music Hall, earning a standing ovation. It marked BOWIE's first performance since his "A Reality Tour" ended last summer, and the event--which celebrated the intersection of fashion and music and doubled as a fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina--aired the following night (Friday, September 9) as a prime-time special on CBS-TV. As Spin.com noted, "Bowie's performance was serious with good reason," a reference to recent events. Introduced by Alicia Keys as "an artist who towers above the rest," BOWIE startled the audience, contrasting his stylish suit with black-eye make-up and a bandaged hand as he performed--accompanied only by longtime keyboardist Mike Garson on piano--an especially poignant version of "Life On Mars," his 1971 classic about alienation and dislocation (from 1971's Hunky Dory album). BOWIE subsequently collaborated with Montreal's acclaimed experimental rockers The Arcade Fire for two songs that sounded like cousins of each other: his own apocalyptic countdown gem "Five Years" (from 1972's Ziggy Stardust album) and Arcade Fire's urgent "Wake Up." Observed Spin.com, "The Montreal indie rockers offered a folky reading of Bowie's 'Five Years' with Bowie on lead vocals, followed by a simmering rendition of their own 'Wake Up' with Bowie and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler harmonizing. The song ended in a twinkling coda, complete with accordion, that roused the crowd to its feet." Asked why he chose to make the "Fashion Rocks" television show his first appearance in a year and half, BOWIE told The Mirror: "I told them I'd do it only if they got Arcade Fire to perform. They're fantastic."
