FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 13, 2005

NASHVILLE -- 650 AM WSM announces the launch of “From Tootsies to the Ryman,” a four month long talent search that will culminate during the week of the station’s 80th anniversary with a special celebration show at the Ryman Auditorium.

The premise is simple and harkens back to the days when the stars used to walk down the alley to play at Tootsie’s after performing on the Grand Ole Opry. Hopefuls can send in CDs in an attempt to qualify to perform at one of four qualifying nights at Tootsies Orchid Lounge. A panel of judges will determine which four entrants will be awarded a slot to perform.

Each qualifying performer will play two original songs and then a well-known headliner act will close out the show. The headliner will also serve as a celebrity judge, in addition to three music industry judges. Serving as judges will be Wade Jessen (Country Chart Director, Billboard Magazine), Brian Mansfield (Country Music Writer, USA Today), and David Preston (Director of Writer/Publisher Relations, BMI). A winner will be announced after the headliner performs, and will go on to perform in the “From Tootsies to the Ryman” finals. The finals will be held on September 22nd at the Ford Theater inside the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The grand prize winner of the talent search will be awarded the opening slot for the 650 AM WSM 80th Anniversary Listener Appreciation Concert at the Ryman Auditorium to be held on Saturday, October 8th.

The first qualifying night will take place on Thursday, June 30th at the World Famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge located at 422 Broadway in the heart of downtown Nashville. Grand Ole Opry star Mel McDaniel will headline the show. Special commemorative Hatch Show Print posters will be made for each Tootsie’s show and will be given to the first twenty listeners who attend. The shows are free and open to the public but will fill up fast.

Headlining the 80th Anniversary Concert will be Ray Price, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on May 1st of this year. Ray Price, “The Cherokee Cowboy,” is known for the number one hits “For the Good Times,” “I Won’t Mention It Again,” “The Same Old Me,” “Crazy Arms,” “My Shoes Keep Walking Back to You,” etc. Other artists will be announced as confirmation becomes available.

To enter the competition, visit www.wsmonline.com for an entry form. Monthly deadlines will occur one week before each qualifying night at Tootsie’s. Entries that do not make the deadline will be automatically considered for next performance at Tootsie’s.

650 AM WSM’s first official broadcast day was October 5th, 1925. The station is the radio home for the Grand Ole Opry, which has been broadcast live over the airwaves since its inception. WSM can be picked up in 38 states on 650 AM, nationwide on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 137, and worldwide on www.wsmonline.com.
