Composers To Benefit Through New Music Publishing Accord Between BBC And BMG Music Publishing

Bookmark and Share
LONDON June 29, 2005 -- BBC Worldwide has completed a deal with BMG Music Publishing, which maximises the value of its publishing catalogue to the BBC, and allows BBC Worldwide to concentrate on developing new broadcast-related music publishing initiatives.

Following a careful assessment of potential publishing partners and a closed bidding process, BMG Music Publishing has acquired BBC Worldwide’s existing music publishing interests, which include music from productions such as the Teletubbies, The Tweenies, BBC News 24, Walking with Dinosaurs, and The Planets. BMG has acted as BBC Worldwide’s music publishing administrator since 1996, and while the relationship between the companies has changed, composers' interests remain unaffected.

The catalogue sale creates maximum value from the portfolio of copyrights for the BBC, as BBC Worldwide's profits will be re-invested into the corporation.

For BMG Music Publishing, the acquisition of BBC Worldwide’s catalogue will increase its strong position in the film/TV industry by adding music to its catalogue from some of the U.K.’s top programmes, which have worldwide distribution. BMG represents the music catalogues of major film/TV companies i2i/RTL, Fremantle, Tiger Aspect, Wall To Wall, IMA Films, DIC Entertainment, Lion’s Gate/Tristar Pictures, Aardman Animation (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run), Transworld International, September Films, Brighter Pictures and Famous Music (the catalogue of Paramount Pictures) as well as such renowned film/TV composers as Ennio Morricone (A Fistful of Dollars), Yann Tiersen (Goodbye Lenin!, Amélie Poulain) and Alberto Iglesias (Talk To Her). BMG Music Publishing also has a long-term agreement with the U.K.’s Thin Man Films, through which it published the score to the three-time BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Vera Drake.

BBC Worldwide will continue to acquire music copyrights and build a new music catalogue. BMG will continue to support BBC Worldwide’s Music Publishing operations and administer BBC Worldwide's new catalogue going forward.

Under this new framework, BBC Worldwide is looking to develop a number of new music publishing initiatives that seek to maximise the potential of broadcast opportunities, which will be announced in due course.

BBC Worldwide's Jason Blain, Director of Global Business Development & Music, said: "This new arrangement brings benefits to all involved. We have fulfilled our core purpose of creating profit from our assets for the BBC, while securing composers' ongoing interests through the arrangement with BMG Music Publishing. In addition, under the new arrangement, the music publishing team at BBC Worldwide is now focused on working with composers and broadcast partners on developing new publishing opportunities, expected to create significant value to all concerned."

BMG Music Publishing's Nicholas Firth, Chairman and CEO, said: "We're very excited about this deal and are delighted to deepen our relationship with BBC Worldwide, which further broadens our music publishing interests in the film/TV field. BMG Music Publishing will continue to provide the necessary infrastructure to effectively and proactively represent the composers and artists whose work makes up BBC Worldwide's music publishing portfolio."
