One In 10 Americans Show A Heavy Preference To Control Their Media And Entertainment

Eleven percent (an estimated 27 million) of Americans own one or more on-demand media devices such as a TiVo/DVR, iPod or other portable MP3 player, and also exhibit multiple behaviors that show a heavy tendency toward an on-demand media lifestyle. These and other findings will be revealed when Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB) and Edison Media Research executives present new data from Internet and Multimedia 2005: The On-Demand Consumer. The study focuses on new devices and services that allow Americans to exercise more control over the media they consume. Topics include DVRs, portable MP3 players and other on-demand technologies.

Other new findings from the study include:
* An estimated 43 million Americans choose to record TV programming to watch at a different time (using technology such as VCR or TiVo/DVR); more than half (52 percent) of this group record TV primarily to watch programming at their leisure, while nearly one-third (29 percent) do so primarily to skip through commercials. 
* Broadband connections are just as common as dial-up connections in American households. Forty- seven percent of people with home Internet access have broadband and 47 percent have dial-up service.
* Awareness of XM Satellite Radio has tripled since 2002, from 17 percent to 50 percent, while awareness of Sirius Satellite Radio has increased even more significantly, from 8 percent to 54 percent.

In addition, Mr. Rose and Mr. Lenski will address the latest data on the impact of Internet audio and video usage and the effect on traditional media usage; and awareness and usage of satellite media, on-demand devices and more.
