INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestral Division, announces the 17th annual Yamaha Young Performing Artist (YYPA) program. Designed to provide early career recognition for outstanding young musicians in the United States, the program goes hand in hand with the annual Bands of America (BOA) Summer Symposium and serves as its kick-off concert.

The 2005 YYPA winners will join a total of more than 150 others who have earned the distinction since the program’s inception in 1989. Former YYPA winners include some of the top performers and educators in the country; many have received scholarships to prestigious universities and conservatories, or are playing professionally with major jazz groups and top symphony orchestras.

Saxophonist Otis Murphy, a 1994 YYPA winner, is currently a faculty member at Indiana University. Kenneth Tse, also a saxophonist and 1994 winner, is on faculty at the University of Iowa. Even before his planned 2005 graduation from the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, 1999 YYPA winner Dominick Farinacci is planning an album release and tours in Japan and the United States. Jazz pianist Aaron Parks, a 2000 YYPA winner, is signed to Keynote Records and has several albums to his credit. He has been a member of the Terence Blanchard Quintet and currently leads his own ensembles. Walter Blanding, Jr., a 1990 YYPA winner, is a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and is a former member of the Wynton Marsalis Quintet.

This year’s national awards concert will be held on Monday evening, June 27 at 8:00 p.m. at Braden Auditorium on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. The winners will be guests of Yamaha for a weekend of rehearsals, master classes, special awards concerts and social events.

Those wishing to apply must be between the ages of 16 and 21 and be nominated by a university, private or studio teacher, conductor, director, professional performer, music dealer or community music dealer. Sponsors may not be related in any way to the nominee. Candidates must have attained a high level of musical achievement in solo appearances, awards, honors, scholarships and ensemble performances and have the personal qualities compatible with the high musical standards necessary for acceptance into the program.

An application form and complete details can be found at http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Documents/Education/YYPA-05.pdf. Candidates are asked to include recommendations from two people (not including the sponsor) and to submit a CD recording of a recent solo performance with accompaniment. The recording must include performances of contrasting styles. Recordings will be judged by a panel of musicians including Bil Jackson, Mike Garson, Martha Mooke, Eugene Rousseau, Dave Samuels, Allen Vizzutti, Douglas Yeo and Jim Walker.

All materials must be postmarked by March 14, 2005.
