Marilyn Monroe Mystery: Whose "Baby" Is It?
Marilyn Monroe Mystery: Whose "Baby" is it? Basinet’s take on “Santa Baby” hurrying down 35,000 chimneys a day LOS ANGELES -- An especially sultry version of holiday evergreen "Santa Baby," widely attributed to Marilyn Monroe, has become a runaway hit this year. The mystery is that no one seems to be able to quite pinpoint the movie or record that Marilyn did the song for. The actual crooner of the constantly mis-identified version is top model and actress turned recording artist Cynthia Basinet, who reports up to 35,000 hits a day on her website and music sites from Amazon to iTunes. Monroe never recorded the tune yet most people have been assuming the breathy, sexy version can only be hers, not surprising as critics say it captures the essence of Marilyn in song and attitude. Even radio DJs with Basinet’s CD in hand have trouble identifying it without mentioning Marilyn. “It really is the song she was made to sing,” said Basinet. “I’m honored that people think it evokes her sensuality so well, though it’s a little frustrating not to be identified.” Basinet originally recorded the song as part of a personal gift CD to longtime paramour Jack Nicholson. They split and she released it to the public where it was quickly picked up for the soundtrack to the film “Party Monster.” Basinet’s version has been the one luring people under the mistletoe ever since and is one of the most downloaded singles on the Net. The much-covered tune became a yuletide standard when Eartha Kitt originally sang it in 1953 and a hit for Madonna in 1987. Despite the mistaken attribution, the exposure from Basinet’s single was still enough to gain recognition from numerous review sources, radio playlists and fans. This allowed her to go to raise awareness for the Saharawian refugees living in self determination in the Western Sahara. Basinet is a throwback to an era when the voice carried a record, not Pro Tools or audio tune ups. She can be found on playlist rotations worldwide alongside the greats like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and contemporary artists like Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Harry Connick, Jr. and Alicia Keys. Cynthia’s CD, "For You With Love" a collection of love songs including "Santa Baby" is available thru Amazon.com and digital distribution (Apple iTunes, Sony Connect, MSN Music, Rhapsody, BuyMusic, Emusic, the new Napster, AOL's MusicNet, MusicMatch, and more).
