SoundExchange Joins International Webcasting Agreement

Bookmark and Share

SoundExchange signed the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) international webcasting agreement today in Warsaw, Poland, at the annual IFPI Performance Rights Committee meeting. This agreement will allow DMCA-compliant webcasters and simulcasters to stream their music based on a single "one-stop" license. These digital music services will now have a much more simplified process that saves them the labor of having to secure licenses from many different national licensing organizations.

Performance rights organizations from Europe, Asia, North and South America are now participating in the "one-stop" licensing regime created by the Agreement. Participating societies are now able to license online transmissions of DMCA-compliant webcasting and simulcasting into other territories and to ensure that their sound recording copyright owners receive payment when their recordings are transmitted outside of their own country. Note: downloading is not a part of this agreement as this type of license must be secured directly from the copyright owner.

"This agreement recognizes that webcasting is an international medium that requires the cooperation of all licensing bodies in order to ensure that copyright owners and artists are compensated," said John L. Simson, SoundExchange's Executive Director. "SoundExchange welcomes this giant step towards one-stop licensing of worldwide rights."

"The reciprocal Webcasting Agreement that IFPI and the record companies' and artists' collecting societies have put together is an important step forward in that it creates global one-stop-shops for the licensing of streaming of sound recordings over the Internet," commented Lauri Rechardt, IFPI's Deputy General Counsel, Director of Licensing and Litigation. "SoundExchange joining in this reciprocal agreement is great news both for the US artists and record companies and users that want to stream music over the Internet legally"
