Bjˆrk on her new album, Med?lla. If you were seeking a metaphor for her extraordinary approach to music making, that lyric would serve nicely. Long adept at fashioning new sonic universes, Bjˆrk now returns with a record which is perhaps her most daring. "Instruments are so over," she says with a mischievous twinkle. The vast majority of Med?lla relies solely on the myriad textures and timbres of the human voice.
The record is a collaborative effort of her and other voices that give the album many moods. By working with the Icelandic Choir and the London Choir the album evokes a spiritual feel at times while the other cuts seem determined to induce frantic dancing. She recruited the world's foremost human beatbox artists including former The Roots member Rahzel, Japan's Dokaka and the UK's Shlomo - their appearance is a reminder of the power of humans during an era of technological obsession. Med?lla delivers raw emotions that come from deep within the enigmatic artist - it is an album truly ahead of its time.
