The third annual British Phonographic Industry (BPI) U.K. showcase at this year's South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, boasts its strongest lineup to date. The Thursday, March 18, bill at the Fox & Hound (401 Guadalupe in Austin) will feature The Cooper Temple Clause, Athlete, The Futureheads and Dogs Die In Hot Cars plus two unsigned acts, Thirteen Senses and Earth The Californian Love Dream. The main showcase will be preceded by a mid-afternoon acoustic showcase at Brush Square (East 5th Street and Neches, adjacent to Austin Convention Centre) hosted by BPI, BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music with performances from Jamie Cullum, Tom McRae and Aqualung. (See below for set times and additional information on these artists.)

The annual British night at SXSW provides exposure for up-and-coming British talent at the industry convention. The event is hosted by the U.K. record industry group BPI, who partnered for 2004 with Phonographic Performance Ltd, British Underground, US booking agency Little Big Man Booking and UK promoters Metropolis, with support from U.K. Trade & Investment. (See below for additional information on these organizations.)

Last year's unsigned act on the British lineup, The Darkness, were widely hailed as one of the festival's highlights. Said band manager Sue Whitehouse: "For The Darkness, playing on the British stage at SXSW 2003 definitely raised awareness and created a lot of interest in the band, especially internationally. The efforts of the BPI and partners in promoting the showcase and the bands involved proved instrumental in opening up many opportunities and avenues for us to explore. There was an incredible buzz about The Darkness for the whole week of the conference." The glam rockers from Lowestoft have since signed to East West/Atlantic Records, with their debut album Permission To Land reaching the top 40 of the Billboard chart and enjoying great success at American radio and on MTV.
