Gritz Magazine Celebrates 5th Anniversary

February 16th, 2004

February marks the 5th anniversary of the founding of Gritz magazine. Gritz is the invention of musician/journalist Michael Buffalo Smith and started as an online music magazine in 1999. When the website grew by leaps and bounds, averaging 700,000-plus hit a month, it was decided to turn it into a print magazine three years later. The result is a nationally distributed print publication that is also sold in England and Germany.
Over the years Gritz has expanded from a predominately southern rock magazine to also focus on other musical genres such as bluegrass, the blues, jam band, cowboy/western, and other forms of Americana music. Recent covers have featured Billy Joe Shaver, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bonnie Bramlett, and Del McCoury. The print version of Gritz got off to a big start with an extensive and exclusive interview with the legendary producer Tom Dowd. It was to be his last interview as Dowd died soon after. And, legendary musician Charlie Daniels writes a column in each edition.
The magazine is based in Greenville, South Carolina and there is a decidedly southern bent to it. But the philosophy is to write about all of the roots and branches of the music that has it roots in the South, such as the blues, rock and roll, bluegrass, R & B, and the Louisiana and Texas music scenes. Therefore, the scope of the magazine is wide open.
The magazine can now be found in stores from coast-to-coast, such as Borders, Walden Books, and Tower records, as well as many smaller outlets and music shops. Gritz received national television exposure in the month of January 2004 when editor Michael Buffalo Smith was interviewed multiple times on the show Country’s Most Shocking; Southern Rock and Outlaw Country that was broadcast on Country Music Television (CMT). Smith was interviewed numerous times about Toy and Tommy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band, whom he knew coming up in South Carolina.
The magazine is now a quarterly, but it may expand to a bi-monthly in the year to come. The magazine’s website is still up and running with new features added often.
