Alan Mann Musical Memorial Set For February 28, 2004

When Philadelphia singer/songwriter/bandleader/independent music pioneer Alan Mann died tragically in 1987, there was talk of a public memorial to be held at JC Dobbs, the storied nightclub that was home to Alan and his band and saw the breaking out of many now world famous artists. Close to seventeen years later, around the time that Mann would have turned 50, the memorial is finally being held. JC Dobbs no longer exists; so the event will take place virtually around the corner from the old South Street landmark, at the Tokio Ballroom, a new live music venue at 122 Lombard Street, Philadelphia, PA, run by David Simons of Five Year Plan Entertainment.

According to ongoing scribe and occasional Prime Time A&E contributor, Paul Mick, “Alan was one of the founding fathers of the Philly indie rock and singer-songwriter movement. His music was relevant when it was being created and committed to vinyl a quarter century ago, and not only sounds fresh today but maybe even better."

A growing list of members of the Philadelphia music community both past and present will perform and/or attend. Among them are: Kenn Kweder, Peter Stone Brown, Nazz frontman Stewkey, Jamaladeen Tecuma's associate Lisa Bell, former Andy Boyle and Jamison Smoothdog sidemen Joel Hornikel and the Planets, Scott Bricklin of 4 Way Street, Thomas Salvey of Abigail’s End, Matt Sevier, Janet Bressler, Tom Gillam from Tractor Pull, the Last Minute Jam's John Torres, Flamin’ Harry McGonigal, Jamie O’ Donnell, and Rodney Anonymous of the Dead Milkmen, as well as former members of the Alan Mann Band: Allen James, Monk Manley, and Randy Dance reunited for this very special event. Others have expressed interest, including Philly ex-pats now living in New York, Nashville, and L.A. Geo Sound’s producer/engineer George Manney will screen a video of the Alan Mann Band performing live at the Ripley Music Hall and Mann’s rare recordings will be spun between acts. WMMR Street Beat (’86-’96) DJ Cyndy Drue and WMGK's Ray Koob will co-host.

“It’s gratifying to see something that started as a dream, turning into a cool reality,” says Ms. Bressler, organizer of the memorial. “When I say ‘dream’ I mean that literally- one night in November I had a dream about an Alan Mann tribute concert- the next day I made some phone calls and sent some emails- the idea seemed slow to catch on at first, but has gathered momentum over the weeks and months. Although known to the general public primarily for his familiar holiday song, 'Christmas on the Block', Alan was a unique and inspiring presence on the scene during his all-too-brief lifetime. The warm response to this tribute proves that he is well remembered by many and that his legacy deserves wider recognition”.

In keeping with Mann's credo of "free arts, fine enterprise", there is no cover charge.
