The fourth annual DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books has announced that its Feb. 5-7 event will be keynoted by alternative music pioneer Frank Black.

The three-day gathering will be held in Hollywood at the Barnsdall Art Park and the Derby nightclub, offering panels, workshops and showcases focused on independent musicians, authors, filmmakers and entrepreneurs.

From the beginning of his career as a founding member of the seminal Boston alternative rock group the Pixies, through his pioneering solo work with digital downloads and unedited releases, Frank Black has been an uncompromising and adventurous artist whose music has always been at the forefront of the next wave.

Black will discuss his career, the state of the entertainment industry and his surprising plans for the coming year in a one-on-one conversation with fellow Boston refugee and noted journalist/radio talkshow host Johnny Angel.

Regular registration for a full pass to the 2004 DIY Convention is available now at www.diyconvention.com or by calling 323-665-8080 with a credit card. Regular registration deadline ends Jan. 15.

In addition to Black, confirmed panelists for the 2004 DIY Convention include Kevin Martin, former frontman of Candlebox; CDBaby founder Derek Sivers; Dead Kennedys lead singer Jeff Alulis; Grammy-nominee Cathy Richardson; DIY pioneer Gary Wilson; "American Yearbook" director Brian Ging; and print-on-demand specialist John Harnish. The full lineup for the 2004 DIY Convention will be announced shortly.

2004 DIY Convention passes include admission to the 2004 DIY Music Festival finals at the Derby nightclub in Hollywood and the 2004 DIY Film Festival finals at Barnsdall Art Park; the gala DIY opening night party; plus the full day of panels, workshops and exhibits on Saturday at Barnsdall.

The DIY Film and DIY Music festivals are still accepting entries through Jan. 25, 2004. Registrants can enter at www.diyconvention.com or call our offices at 323-665-8080. Entrants are eligible for prizes and screenings in various cities throughout the year.
