Counterfeiting Factory And House In Bristol Raided

Bookmark and Share

Two premises in Bristol were searched this morning (21 November) in a joint operation by investigators from the MCPS Anti Piracy Unit – working on behalf of composers and songwriters - and FACT – working on behalf of the film industry. Officers from Avon & Somerset police were drafted in to support the raids.

One of the premises in Ashton Vale was a house, which had been turned into a complete counterfeiting factory. Here a 48 bay duplicator was discovered together with tens of thousands of counterfeit audio CDs and film DVDs (including pre-release films 'Love Actually' and 'Master and Commander)'. It is thought the counterfeit products were destined to be distributed through the Bristol area (markets, car boot sales, etc).

Counterfeit cigarettes and rolling tobacco were discovered during the raid on the second house in the Fishponds area of Bristol. HM Customs and Excise have been informed.

Three arrests were made during the raids. Two men and one woman could face charges under the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act (1988), the Trade Marks Act (1994) and the Trade Descriptions Act (1968).

Nick Kounoupias of the MCPS Anti-Piracy Unit said:

"This was a significant counterfeiting and distribution operation that was clearly preparing to flood the Bristol area with fake goods in the run up to the Christmas period. This would have threatened the livelihoods of all of those people the music industry supports – including those who work for legitimate local retailers.

"I would urge anyone not to be tempted to buy cheap fake product. As well as damaging the economy, counterfeiting operations are frequently linked to organised crime and your cash simply helps to fund other criminal activity in your neighbourhood – drugs for example"

Jim Angell Director of Operations at FACT said:

This joint operation is the result of tentative enquiries, combined intelligence, and inter-agency cooperation resulting in this vast seizure of counterfeit products destined for the South West Christmas Market.
