"Guerrilla Music Marketing" Book Appears In Major Motion Picture

Bob Baker's Self-Published Book Used Prominently in Jack Black's "The School of Rock" #1 Film at the Box Office October 3-5

In an era when many companies pay big bucks to get their products "placed" in major motion pictures, one do-it-yourself author is enjoying widespread exposure with the appearance of his book in the new film "The School of Rock." And he didn't have to pay a dime or twist one arm to earn his spot on the Silver Screen. In fact, Paramount Pictures approached him to use the book in the movie.

"About a year ago I was contacted by a company that secures props for motion pictures and told that Paramount wanted a copy of my 'Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook' for possible use as a prop in a movie starring Jack Black," explains St. Louis, MO-based author/publisher Bob Baker. "I signed the release form and mailed off a copy."

Baker says he had mostly forgotten about the movie until he heard promotions for "The School of Rock" over the summer. "But I didn't get too excited," he admits. "I figured my book was one of many props gathered for the movie, and that I'd be lucky if it ended up on a bookshelf in the background."

During the film's opening weekend in early October, Baker saw the movie for the first time. "Imagine my surprise when, about halfway through the movie, I saw my book prominently displayed on the big screen. It's only visible for about three seconds, but the title and author name are clearly legible."

The film, which was the #1 box office draw in the U.S. the weekend of October 3-5, is about Dewey Finn (Jack Black), a rocker who poses as a substitute teacher at a conservative, private school. He teaches his fifth grade class the wonders of rock & roll and forms a band with the kids to enter a battle of the bands. Summer (portrayed by 10-year-old Miranda Cosgrove), who has been appointed to be the band's manager, holds the "Guerrilla" book in a classroom scene.

"You can tell the director wants people to be able to read the title to make it obvious the character is studying the music biz," Baker says.

The only other book shown in the film is M. William Krasilovsky's "This Business of Music" (Watson-Guptill), an industry textbook that's been regularly revised and updated since 1964.

"You have this well-known textbook from a major publisher, and then there's my book, which I've self-published since 1996 and promoted using the same guerrilla techniques I advocate in the book," says Baker, who purposely avoids traditional book sales channels and instead uses the Internet and live workshops to reach his target audience.

"Some may say this opportunity was handed to me, but I believe it shows the power that one person -- whether it's an author, musician or artist -- can have when they have a mission and pursue a do-it-yourself path."

For those wanting to catch a glimpse of Baker's book in the movie, the "Guerrilla" book makes its appearance immediately following the scene in which Dewey is invited to have lunch with the other teachers. They ask him what he thinks of a certain teaching method. Not knowing what to say, he starts quoting Whitney Houston: "I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way ..."

"Keep your eyes peeled," Baker adds. "Right after that scene, you'll clearly see my book and the 'Guerrilla Music Marketing' title."

Bob Baker is also the author of "Unleash the Artist Within: Four Weeks to Transforming Your Creative Talents Into More Recognition, More Profit and More Fun" and "Branding Yourself Online: How to Use the Internet to Become a Celebrity or Expert in Your Field." He publishes free articles and an e-mail newsletter for independent musicians at www.TheBuzzFactor.com.
