AltaVista's Multimedia Index Becomes World's Largest

Bookmark and Share

AltaVista, a business of Overture Services, Inc. and a leading provider of search services and technology, today announced it has significantly expanded its multimedia index to more than 550 million files -- making it the world's largest, with 125 million more files than the next highest competitor.

AltaVista's expanded multimedia index catalogs more than 540 million comprehensive, high-quality image files and approximately 11 million video and audio files, including popular formats such as MP3 and MPEG. Included in the index are hundreds of millions of files published in countries around the world, enhancing the user experience across AltaVista's U.S. and international Web sites. Additionally, AltaVista added a new refinement feature to its image index that enables consumers to customize searches by dimension.

With greater emphasis on providing searches by file quality, including customized searches for larger image files and superior downloadable audio and video content, the index now offers AltaVista important advantages in meeting users' growing demand for multimedia search capabilities. The enhanced index also includes professional image content from providers such as Corbis, one of the world's leading providers of digital images worldwide. Before the most recent update, AltaVista's index included 400 million media files.

"With our launch of the largest multimedia resource on the Web, AltaVista is once again raising the standard for Internet users' search experience," said Jim Barnett, president of Web search at Overture. "We are committed to delivering innovative, new search technologies that build upon our long heritage of leadership in Web search."

To access the multimedia index, Internet users can visit www.altavista.com and click on the "Image," "MP3 / Audio," or "Video" tabs located above the search box, or log on directly at images.altavista.com, audio.altavista.com and video.altavista.com, respectively.
