Cuban Hip Hop Groups Join The Roots In A Historic Concert At The Apollo Theater
The Fourth Annual Hip Hop Theater Festival, The International Hip Hop Exchange, The Apollo Theater Foundation and OkayPlayer.com present: THE HIP HOP UNITY CONCERT Monday, June 9th, 2003 @ 8 pm In its continuing effort to promote cultural exchange, The Hip Hop Theater Festival and The International Hip Hop Exchange will unite Cuba's leading Hip Hop groups, Doble Filo and Obsesion with America's leading politically and socially conscious Hip Hop artists: The Roots, Common, Tony Touch, Soul Live w/J-Live, Kanye West, El Meswy and Tomorrowz Weaponz with other special guests. This is not the first time that The Hip Hop Theater Festival organizers have made groundbreaking strides in cultural exchange. Last year, Obsesion was one of four Hip Hop groups that made up the Cuban Hip Hop Delegation," a cultural exchange/residency program conceived of by Festival artistic director Danny Hoch and his IHX (International Hip Hop Exchange) cohorts, in which the Cuban artists held workshops, collaborated, performed and coexisted with their New York peers. "Hip Hop is the purest form of artistic expression coming out of urban neighborhoods all over the world," said Hoch who has been traveling to Cuba and participating in the island's Hip Hop scene for almost a decade. "This kind of event proves that cultural identity transcends all political and social boundaries and is instrumental is building awareness on a global level," he concluded. The Roots recently visited Cuba where they performed with groups from the island that included Doble Filo and Obsesion, and were active organizers in the effort to share the stage again in the US. Strong proponents of the importance of cultural exchange as an instrument of social enlightenment and change, they have been instrumental in achieving yet another historic collaboration. "Global Unity through Hip Hop Music is something that The Roots cater to. We are excited to welcome Doble Filo & Obsesion to the USA. When we visited Cuba this past year, we were inspired in so many ways, by their integrity and indigenous form of Hip Hop music," said Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, the drummer of the Roots. Proceeds will go to benefit the Hip Hop Theater Festival and The International Hip Hop Exchange. The Hip Hop Theater Festival's mission is to support emerging artists in the developing field of Hip Hop theater and to raise awareness among the Hip Hop generation.
