Sparklehorse Debuts New Videos On Sundance Channel's Sonic Cinema

Bookmark and Share

Sundance Channel's original series "Sonic Cinema," concludes its season Friday, October 26 with the third and final episode, "Sonic Cinema: Sparklehorse," the exclusive television premiere of a dazzling suite of films inspired by songs from the acclaimed band's latest album "It's a Wonderful Life" (Capitol Records). Animators Brothers Quay, filmmaker Jem Cohen (Benjamin Smoke) and other friends of the band took part in this unusual project, applying their distinctive personal vision to the evocative music of Sparklehorse singer/guitarist Mark Linkous. The episode is hosted by Rolling Stone contributing editor, Rob Sheffield.

Noted experimental filmmaker Guy Maddin (Tales from the Gimli Hospital) evokes memories of silent films and Victoriana in his haunting black and white video for the album's title track, while Grant Gee (Meeting People Is Easy) paints a poignant portrait of urban life in "Devil's New." Standing outside of time is photographer/filmmaker Gariné Torossian's "Babies on the Sun," which uses children's literature-style illustrations to achieve a gorgeous ambiguity. "It's A Wonderful Life" is Sparklehorse's third album and includes the guest vocals of musical innovators PJ Harvey, Tom Waits and Nina Persson of The Cardigans.

"Sonic Cinema" illustrates the creative cross-pollination that takes place between artists who intersect the mediums of music and filmmaking. The programs feature music videos, short films and short-form documentaries along with interviews with the musicians, filmmakers, photographers and graphic artists whose collaborations are highlighted on the show. (2001) TVPG () (1:00) Encore performances: Nov. 6 12:35 am; December 13 at 11:10 am and midnight.
