First Copyright Infringement Detection Solution For Aimster

Bookmark and Share
NEW YORK, NY, MAY 10, 2001 - MediaForce, an digital copyright protection firm specializing in the detection and prevention of digital piracy on the Internet, today announced that its suite of copyright infringement detection services has been extended to support the popular Aimster file-trading network.

Aimster is the music file-trading system that aims at AOL's Instant Messaging as a basis for music file-sharing among participants.

"Nearly 4.5 million Aimster users are able to illegally download and pass on protected audio files, costing copyright holders estimated $1 billion this year," said Aaron Fessler, CEO of mediaForce. "Today, we announce that our clients can now use our advanced digital piracy services to identify and eliminate the rampant copyright infringement on the Aimster network."

According to Aimster, the Aimster service uses encryption technology to ensure that files and directories moved around its network are encrypted, making it difficult for copyright holders to protect their legal copyrights. Aimster argues that any attempt to monitor the file-swapping activities of its nonpaying members, who download the software free, would be a violation of copyright law and the members' right of privacy "since it has encrypted transmissions on its network." MediaSentry's innovative solution permits copyright holders to identify infringement on the Aimster network - without bypassing the encryption technology built into the Aimster network.

Without using encryption or watermarks, mediaForce tracks any music file regardless of the music's title, file name, distribution date, compression method or sampling rate. Using advanced heuristics, MD5 checksum matching, and probability ranking formulas, mediaForce identifies music files on peer-to-peer networks - including Napster, iMesh, Aimster, Gnutella, and OpenNap - that match the originals. Once an MP3 audio file is located, mediaForce records the infringement, and electronically sends an infringement notice to both the consumer and the service provider. The company's solutions provide an positive identification accuracy rate of over 99.6%.
