Guilford Sound Recording Studio Set To Attain Net-Positive Carbon Imprint With New Solar And Heating Upgrades

Guilford, VT (January 29, 2020) – Already a leader in energy efficiency for the music business, state-of-the-art residential recording studio Guilford Sound has upgraded its solar and geothermal heating capabilities. Together, these upgrades are expected to allow the studio to generate more electricity than it uses by the end of 2020, attaining a net-positive carbon imprint.

The new solar upgrade, designed and installed by Dynamic Organics, consists of 110 Solaria 360 Wp PowerXT modules on the building’s roof. This produces around 30kW AC of energy, nearly four times the amount of the original array and twice the average load of a studio this size (20 kW). Power that is not used is redirected back to the grid, allowing others to make use of the clean energy surplus. In addition, Guilford Sound has upgraded the logic controls of its geothermal heat pump system, configuring them to re-use heat extracted from studio rooms that require cooling by redirecting it into radiant heat throughout the rest of the building.

“Protecting the environment is incredibly important to us at Guilford Sound, and we’re happy to do our part to promote green energy in the music industry with our new upgrades,” said Dave Snyder, Owner and Engineer at Guilford Sound. “From live shows to recording to pressing vinyl, the music business can be tough on the environment. Many in the industry are taking concrete steps to correct this, like Coldplay’s recent stand on touring, and we hope to see more initiatives like this in every sector of music going forward.

Guilford Sound currently has two studios for rent or hire. Studio A is a large format tracking and mixing studio, while Studio B is a newly constructed, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to mixing, editing, and electronic music production. Each studio features high-end equipment, both modern and vintage, including a 64-input API Legacy console and 12-channel Neve Melbourne sidecar, both with Flying Faders. Guilford Sound also offers over 25 vintage tube condensers, two Fairchild 670 limiters, and an expertly tuned echo chamber. Guilford Sound also uses a 50kVA isolation transformer to feed a subpanel that removes virtually all energy-related noise from the studio, ensuring the power supply will not interfere with recording equipment.

In addition, there are several options for artist housing at Guilford Sound, perfect for songwriting camps and lengthy recording sessions. The Earth House offers spacious and comfortable accommodations year-round with room for up to 10 guests, five bedrooms (each with a private full bath), a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and a large, cozy common room for lounging, collaborating, or jamming. During the warmer months, guests can also stay at the Ashworth House, a beautifully restored 1790s farmhouse with five bedrooms and two baths.
