Rua Das Pretas Releases Beautiful New Album, Video

MOJO: “This is a very different beast”

When these Lisbon-based musicians perform it’s not a show, it’s a party, and it's not a party, it's a gathering

Rua das Pretas is a Lisbon-based gathering of international musicians. Their new video for ‘Calma Morena’, featured on the band’s newest release, ‘Lisboa Edition’, was shaped and edited by Felipe Lacerda, editor of the 1998 Oscar-nominated film “Central Station." Watch the video here:

Recent coverage in Forbes, Mojo and Jazziz offered praise: “not fado, samba or bossa nova,” said Mojo, “…this is a very different
beast, growing out of weekly meets in Lisbon to celebrate Lusophonic
music and Portuguese wine.”

More about Rua das Pretas and ‘Lisboa Edition’:
Brazilian singer-guitarist Pierre Aderne moved to Lisbon from Rio, bringing with him the flavors & sounds of the wider world, including collaborations with international chanteuses Melody Gardot and Madeleine Peyroux, Grammy award winning songwriter Jesse Harris, as well as with Japanese percussionist Satoshi Takeishi (Ben Monder), Venezuelan producer Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Lou Reed), Canadian keyboard player Glenn Patscha (Ry Cooder, Sheryl Crow) and reed player Andrew Sterman  (Philip Glass, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen).

North Americans Brian Cullman and Tanner Walle knocked on the door,
came for dinner and stayed for breakfast. Together with guitarist
Augusto Baschera and bass player Walter Areia, the tribe began gathering
In Lisbon and traveling in vans, airplanes and trains, playing on stages
throughout Europe and parts of North America.

Grammy-award winning producer Hector Castillo, who has worked with
Phillip Glass, David Bowie, Beck and Los Cadillacs Fabulosos brought them into the studio in the summer of 2018 and recorded the sound of
their first steps: songs spilling over each other as they found their feet and found their voices. This collection became “The Wine Album”, released in late 2018. It became a cause celebre in Portugal, but noticed in the States as well, where it was touted in Forbes and Mojo.

Earlier this year, they gathered in Lisbon to expand on their earlier work and record 3 new songs at Studio Atlantico Blue: “Calma Morena" is a
refracted samba, drawn from the same sea Pierre was swimming in when
he wrote the international hit “Mina do Condominio” for Seu Jorge, but
washed in the waters of Lisbon. Like so much of the music of Rua das
Pretas, it feels brand new, but like it’s always been there, and it has the
swagger of a tune that’s wandered through customs with the sand of
Ipanema in its pockets.

“Vindima-me” is a fado ballad in stop-time written & played by Pierre
Aderne & Fred Martins, with vocals by fado singer Joana Amendoeira
and with an English section by Brian Cullman, who couldn’t resist
putting his fingerprints on it, turning a love song into a dream of Lisbon.

“Uma Casa Portuguesa” was originally released by Amalia Rodrigues in 1953. João Gilberto, the founder of bossa nova, only performed "Uma Casa Portuguesa" once, at his first concert in Lisbon in 1983 (at Coliseu Dos Recreios). Pierre went back into the archives and found the tape, still unpublished. He spent months listening to it, immersing himself in Joao’s unique style. Pierre started to play it at Rua Das Pretas gatherings, almost as a prayer or candomblé ponto, and it quickly became a hymn of home and belonging. He recorded it in the original arrangement of Walter Branco, recreated lovingly by Brazilian maestro Humberto Araújo.

While they added those songs to the album, Pierre had a feeling that 3
more songs would fit as well…songs from the genesis of Rua Das Pretas.
Looking into the future, he came up with the past: “Fado dos Barcos"
came from the first sessions Pierre recorded in New York with Brian &
Hector, years ago (graced with the vocals of Cuca Roseta, who sings as if
all debts everywhere have just been paid.) On the bass is Ricardo Cruz,
Antonio Zambujo’s producer, and rounding out the band is the unique
Portuguese guitar of Bernardo Couto. On “Nha Morninha", a song so
innocent it makes schoolchildren blush in shame, Pierre is joined by
Portuguese-Cape Verdean legend Sara Tavares, who wanders through the
song with a voice like the moon in the early morning, at first light. “Vinho do Porto”, a song about Porto wine and the absence of Porto wine, was recorded last summer in Lisbon with the estimable Maria Inês Paris, niece of Tito Paris, and daughter of the sea.

Rua Das Pretas is a real address, but it’s more than a location. It’s a
gathering of musicians who are finding a new language together based
around Portuguese, the language of evening birds, sailors and
forgetfulness. Rua Das Pretas is not a show, it’s a party, and it's not just a
party, it's a gathering of Lusophone musical tribes. Lisbon became the
capital of Portuguese language music with musicians from Brazil,
Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and the
musicians of the world who flirt with the music that comes from their
hearts and their longings.
