Former CAA Agent Cameron Mitchell Speaks Out

Cameron Mitchell is now responding to a Hollywood Reporter article filed late last Friday afternoon. “To put it simply, my accuser, Demi Mann, is fabricating her story, likely for material gain.” Mitchell has refrained from responding publicly until now on the advice of counsel and out of concern for his family.

Mitchell has been advocating for and representing artists for over 15 years, most recently at CAA, with a client list including such stellar talents as Reginald Hudlin, Common, Gabrielle Union, Nia Long, Jordan Peele, Terence Howard and RZA, to name a few.

Mitchell emphatically denies the sexual assault allegations by Demi Mann and her attorney, Paul Philips. “I am concerned that we have moved into a space of trial by media and public opinion, as opposed to due process. Mann has come after me unchallenged as a means to gain access to CAA’s deep pockets.” CAA is co-defendant in the civil suit filed by Mann.

Mann was an unrepresented aspiring actress, in the U.S. on a visitor’s visa, who approached Mitchell to represent her at CAA. He acknowledged her drive and tried to help her as an unofficial client, which is a common practice. During this trial period, actors are sent out on auditions and meetings, then feedback is gauged to determine if the agency wishes to pursue official representation. An example is Author/Actress Mirtha Michelle Castro Marmol (Letters To The Men I’ve Loved Before, Fast & The Furious) who affirms, “Before being signed as a client, Cameron took a chance on me and I truly appreciate his help launching my career.” As with Marmol, Mitchell sent Mann on auditions and made introductions, sometimes at social events, which is common practice.

Unfortunately for Mann, general feedback was poor. Mitchell informed Mann that the agency would not be representing her. She was deeply upset about the rejection. Two days after Mitchell delivered the news to her, she filed a complaint against Mitchell with CAA’s HR department and then emphatically demanded that the agency get one of the partners to represent her as a client. This was refused by CAA.

After an exhaustive internal investigation by CAA, during which Mr. Mitchell was suspended with pay, Mitchell was informed that he could return to work and did so.

Ms. Mann then hired an attorney who filed a baseless civil lawsuit against both CAA and Mitchell, attempting to capitalize on the cultural climate in an effort to leverage Mitchell and CAA for monetary gain.

The actress’ public campaign cost Mitchell his job. In a climate of heightened awareness, as soon as the lawsuit was publicized, although no corroboration for her unsubstantiated claims have been produced, CAA had no choice but to cut ties with Mitchell quickly, rather than parse details.

Last week, Mann’s counsel, Paul Philips, made the hyperbolic public claim that he has “never seen anything like this filing,” referring to a motion by Mitchell’s counsel filed on February 20. According to Mitchell’s counsel, Loyst Fletcher, “Motions to stay the proceedings, or Pacer’s motions, are common under these circumstances and in no way validate Ms. Mann’s claims. Either Ms. Mann’s counsel is grossly inexperienced or is manipulating the press in an attempt to further his client’s false claims.”

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is not an attorney in this case, volunteered, "The current cultural environment has made way for a long overdue positive impact on society that hopefully effects wholesale change, safety, fairness, and the opportunity for all to thrive. Exploitation based on gender, sexual orientation, race, financial status, and media value must be rooted out wherever it's found. When discovered, we must be cognizant of due process, ensuring each individual's constitutional and legislative right is honored. As someone who knows and works with Cameron, I hope he is afforded the fairness and due process he is entitled to by the law."
