Rock/Americana Album Delivers “A sense of celebration of the here-and-now” - AXS

“Sherman Ewing comes from the R.E.M./John Prine school of songwriting, and he graduated with honors” - Elmore Magazine

Radio Adds Heat Up, Spring Tour Takes Shape, as Ewing Readies Feb 16th ‘Come and Meet Me’

In an exclusive video premiere and syndicated interview, AXS raves that Rock/Americana singer Sherman Ewing delivers “a sense of celebration of the here-and-now” on his February 16th album, ‘Come and Meet Me’. Evoking Van Morrison, R.E.M., John Prine and more, Ewing weaves together stories of loss, community and finding common ground. At times cathartic, irreverent, mournful and/or combative, the radio-friendly collection is already picking up steam, with adds in Williamsburg, VA, Knoxville, TN, Grand Rapids, MI, Dayton, OH, Boston, MA, Charleston, SC and more.

Excerpt: “Produced by Anthony Krizan (Lenny Kravitz) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Patti Smith, Paul Simon), the new disc / download finds the Minnesota native venturing outside his usual acoustic folk-parameters into the realms of classic rock and R&B. Ewing’s pure, sweet vocals are underscored by electric (and slide) guitars, robust base, piano and organ, and mischievous harmonica. A sense of community—of being part of a larger whole—imbues tracks like “Everything is Beautiful,” “Bring Us Together,” and “Hollywood,” giving the album a sense of celebration of the here-and-now.
But some of the music was written for Ewing’s mother, whose illness and death put the New York resident through an emotional wringer…but whose life lessons gave him a newfound appreciation for everything life has to offer. “Come Back Now” and “Shine” address the profound grief everyone suffers upon losing a loved one. Yet they also capture the joy and beauty of sharing time with those individuals while finding one’s way through life.”

In a recent Elmore exclusive (audio) song premiere of the bittersweet ‘Shine’, the magazine’s publisher praised, “Ewing comes from the R.E.M./John Prine school of songwriting, and he graduated with honors.” Ewing’s track, a remembrance of the last time he saw his mother, is the poignant centerpiece of ‘Come and Meet Me’. Elmore Magazine – Exclusive Song Premiere
By Suzanne Cadgene, 12/6/17
http://www.elmoremagazine.com/2017/12/news/sherman-ewings-holiday-message-shine

Sherman Ewing comes from the R.E.M./John Prine school of songwriting, and he graduated with honors. First and foremost a man of compassion, Ewing sprinkles his songs with humor and joy, but never with refined sugar. From 2006 to 2012 Ewing toured with Widespread Panic’s JoJo Hermann as Missing Cats, going on the road with—among others—the North Mississippi Allstars. Ewing’s upcoming solo CD, Come and Meet Me (February, 2018), shows his breadth as a musician, with songs that range from full-on rock to spare acoustic folk. Excellent production by Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors, Lenny Kravitz) really makes Ewing’s music shine.   Speaking of which, the bittersweet track, “Shine,” evokes Ewing’s gentle side, and his foundations. He gave Elmore a little history of the song’s inception: “I was asked by a dear friend to partake in an event at her theater company last holiday season. She thought a little music might be cool and asked if I wanted to play a song in the Spirit of The Holidays.  The Holidays were a magical time for me as a kid—my mom always went to the end of the world and back to make it so. The last time I ever remember seeing her, she gave me what turned out to be one last gift. She had given up painting to raise her kids, and she knew I loved playing music. She told me to follow my heart and live my dreams—the only catch, to do it as best I can. Of all the songs I have written, this song goes out to Joanne Johnson Ewing.”   Joanne would be proud of her son, and the song she inspired.

More about the album:
‘Come and Meet Me’ is a confident statement from an indie rocker who has earned praise from USA Today, Relix, No Depression, Jambands, NY-1 TV and elsewhere, generating rave reviews and comparisons to Bob Dylan and George Harrison, among others. Respected critic Elysa Gardner, in USA Today, said that Ewing’s songs “have a wry lyricism that suggests a hard-won emotional integrity.” His new album, which ranges from full rock band to spare acoustic folk, was Produced by Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors, Lenny Kravitz,) and Mastered by Grammy-winner Greg Calbi (Paul Simon, Patti Smith).

On the CD’s inspiring title track, Ewing channels Morrison in a soulful, old-school rallying cry about friendship, community and love. On the witty, propulsive ‘Everything is Beautiful’, Ewing evokes the ‘smart rock’ of R.E.M.’s ‘Automatic For The People’, and finds joy in life’s simplest pleasures – it’s an anthem for the ‘everyman’.

More About Sherman Ewing:
For Sherman Ewing, the new album marks the latest chapter in a burgeoning career. His music conveys a hard-earned maturity and a gritty style that can be traced back to his native Minnesota, a virtual rock and roll holy land of the Midwest. His sound has also been seasoned by two decades of experience as a street-wise singer/songwriter in New York City. Early on, Ewing was influenced by the unrefined, raw style of fellow Minnesotans The Replacements and Husker Du, as well as by England’s punk music scene, which he experienced while attending an all boys boarding school in the UK. After prep school, Ewing attended Columbia University in New York City where he first met John “Jojo” Hermann, known now for Widespread Panic (and Missing Cats).
Sherman’s solo career began in 2002 when he teamed up with producer Godfrey Diamond (Lou Reed, Aerosmith, Billy Squier). Ewing and Diamond’s collaborative chemistry was immediate, resulting in the writing and recording of Ewing’s debut CD “Bluemoon.” In 2006, after playing together on and off for 25 years, Sherman Ewing and Jojo Hermann officially united as the Alt/Blues/Rock duo Missing Cats. The duo has toured steadily in the years since, building up a loyal following and making notable appearances, including being invited to play Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam in 2010 with such legendary musicians as Steve Miller and Greg Allman.  In 2011, Sherman Ewing released his solo rock album, “Single Room Saloon” to widespread acclaim, including multiple placements in USA Today and elsewhere. The collection included collaborations with Hermann, Tom Marshall (Phish, Amphibian), and Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors,) with very special appearances by Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan) and George Recile (Keith Richards, Bob Dylan). In 2012, Missing Cats was joined in the studio by Mike Mills (REM), the North Mississippi All Stars and other special guests, resulting in the release of ‘Larry Brown Amen’. The duo supported the album with an 18-city tour, backed by The North Mississippi All Stars.  Ewing’s wrenching album ‘Cross My Broken Heart was released in 2015, and as mentioned above, was inspired in part by his experiences during Hurricane Sandy. Since the 2015 release, Ewing has continued to play dates both solo and with Jojo Hermann both in the New York area and in select U.S. cities.  2018’s ‘Come and Meet Me’ firmly establishes Ewing’s solo career as one to watch. Ewing’s New York story also includes attending Columbia University, working with underprivileged kids at Covenant House, walking dogs while working overnights at Fountain House (a residence for people with mental illness,) and embracing a spiritual path within his community and among his friends, that continues to guide him forward to this day.
