Leading Video Game Developer BioWare Grows Its Arsenal Of Genelec Active Monitors With New 5.1 And 7.1 Setups Across Their Studios

— Longtime Genelec users now have more than a dozen separate Genelec 5.1 or 7.1 setups in their editing suites, giving them an accurate, consistent listening environment for mixing the complex sound design on acclaimed video games like Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda and the upcoming Anthem —

NATICK, MA — Genelec, the leader in active monitoring technology for nearly 40 years, has long been the monitoring solution manufacturer of choice of renowned video game developer BioWare – a division of Electronic Arts. BioWare is known for its complex in-game universe building – including on such games as Dragon Age: Inquisition, the Mass Effect series (including the recent smash hit Mass Effect: Andromeda) and the upcoming, highly-anticipated Anthem – and needless to say, all of these games have intricate, complex audio beds with music, speech and tons of sound effects, all mixed in meticulous detail for surround-sound gaming setups. Recently the company has been upgrading and expanding its arsenal of Genelec monitors and subwoofers, and the company now has well over a dozen different surround-sound setups (5.1 and 7.1) comprising Genelec products – providing a highly accurate, consistent and dependable mixing solution that translates to any end user’s gaming environment.

Going back to the company’s early years over 15 years ago, gaming audio was not as complex as it is now, but the company’s engineers turned to Genelec as their monitor of choice. BioWare Creative Audio Director Mike Kent recalls, “We tried out a lot of speakers, and we landed with Genelecs and we have never looked back. I believe our first Genelec 5.1 setup was 8020 monitors with the 7050 subwoofer. Since then, Genelecs have been our go-to. All our audio designers use Genelecs for referencing. I tend to think of Genelecs like a microscope for sound – you can hear problems in the audio with laser focus. And the mix that you settle on with the Genelecs translates to any other speakers. Our mix rooms are not all perfect listening environments, but Genelec’s digital calibration tools really help us dial in the ideal parameters for each room.”

Recently BioWare has built several more suites, employing 8341’s and 8331’s – both newer members of Genelec’s acclaimed “The Ones” line of Smart Active Monitors. In their most recent mix theater build, a Dolby Atmos setup includes seven 8341’s, four 8331’s in the ceiling position, and a 7370 subwoofer. Other suites include surround setups of 8320’s and the 7350 subwoofer – a configuration that Genelec bundles as the 8320.LSE Surround Smart Active Monitoring 5.1 system.

Jeremie Voillot, BioWare Director of Audio, adds, “I think of our Genelec setups as highly forensic in nature, in terms of the level of detail and troubleshooting that they provide, but they’re also highly customizable and easy to calibrate for these different editing suites. I talk to sound designers from other developers in the industry and they will say, ‘sometimes the sound is great in our room but it doesn’t translate to all speakers and setups.’ That is not a problem for us. With Genelecs, we know that our mixes will translate anywhere and be a seamless part of the gaming experience.”
