Single Review: Sarah Morrison - “Falling Over”

Sarah Morrison’s latest single Falling Over is a heartbreaking rendition of what it is like to be cautious about love because of the actions of a past flame. Accompanied by simple guitar instrumentation, this soulful song is made for women who are just getting over breakups.

Falling Over opens with a few strings that set the pace for Morrison’s hauntingly powerful vocals. Within the veil of a clever mix of indie rock and country music, her silky voice caresses the words, giving life to an all-too-familiar breakup story. All through the song, Morrison uses her strong vocals to make her audience feel the depth of her despair and caution, turning the mood to melancholy in the third verse when she sings of a past partner who betrayed her love.

Sarah Morrison’s voice in Falling Over lives up to the singer’s reputation, and the guitar in the background provides a perfect foil for her to tell a story, but these are not what make the song memorable. After listening to the song, what resonates are the words that her voice glides over, the ones that make the audience empathetic.

As the guitar sounds progress through the first verse of Falling Over and Morrison’s vocals set the mood, her words create imagery that is not easy to shake. She portrays the picture of a woman standing in the background, lusting over a man with the “waves crashing, and as the winds moan.” However, the person is too afraid to go after him because, as she alludes with the words of the chorus, she learned a lesson after being jilted by a past lover, that "cliffs are meant for falling over.” The soulful tones and tunes of the track might be forgettable, but the picture Morrison paints with her words is not.

Falling Over is a great song to sing along to when you are drowning hurt in a whiskey or wine glass. However, if you’re looking for a tune to jam to, it is not it.
