Smoke Season Unveils Fiery New Track “Wolves”

Los Angeles, CA – Smoke Season dives headfirst into the ups and downs of wild relationships with their explosive yet, simultaneously intimate new single, “Wolves.” The single is available for download and streaming on digital music platforms worldwide.

Featuring creepy beats from powerhouse producer / mixer, Christopher Mullings (The Neighborhood, LP) and production from DJ / producer Fabian Ordorica (Goldroom), “Wolves” continues the electro-soul duo’s newfound emphasis on writing indie-dance bangers with a rocksteady flair. Smoke Season, a duo whose wild, passion-filled energy has been a signature since day one, explain that the song came about in the throws of a fiery argument that resulted in one of them exiting the car on a rush-hour filled LA freeway while driving to a writing session. The pair eventually made it to the session, channeled that energy into the song, and had made up before the day was over. “We’re not one to shy away from explosive emotions,” explains lead singer, Gabrielle Wortman. “Let’s just say we’re spirited artists and it keeps our music interesting."

“Wolves” is a part of the slew of new material Smoke Season has written over the past year for their debut full-length album (due out in 2018), which will feature a hotbed of collaborations — including ones with Mix Master Mike, members of Bad Suns, as well as the producers and mixers of Bishop Briggs, Bear Hands, Portugal. the Man and more.

The new songs (showcased during their international tour earlier this fall) finds Smoke Season placing a new emphasis on Jason Rosen's (lead guitarist) Jamaican background through the incorporation of reggae undertones into their signature electro-soul indie pop sound. Rosen, who was raised outside of New York City by a Jamaican mother and European-Jewish father, explains: “Growing up in New York as a mixed race, but white-passing kid, was a mind fuck. There’s a certain level of privilege that comes from being white-passing, but at the same time, you don’t get that sense of belonging within your own ethnicity. I think I shied away from creating material that was outwardly influenced by my family’s Jamaican roots for fear that it would be seen as appropriation since it’s not immediately obvious what my background is.” These hesitations are gone now, Rosen says: “Now I write what comes natural, and that’s my only concern.”

In the past two years, Smoke Season has independently released an EP (Ouroboros) with a corresponding short film (which received features at 2017 Cannes Film Festival and 2017 Hollyshort Film Festival), numerous singles and toured nationwide. Their style has captured the attention of W Magazine, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, Clash Magazine, LA Weekly, and The New York Times, all while earning over six million streams on Spotify. The Los Angeles duo has used their success in music to be a voice for social change — advocating for the LGBTQ community, supporting veteran and immigration reforms, and empowering women worldwide.
