Jamming For Dollars With A Millionaire On National TV

An Ontario rocker has a new solution to make the electric guitar cool again – but his success may ride on a millionaire investor.

On November 2, Chris Prendergast will appear on Canada's Dragons’ Den TV show to pitch his newest invention called JamStack. The JamStack is an attachable guitar amplifier that lets guitarists play along to music or record and share through smartphone apps.

The former guitarist for Death Valley Yacht Club taped the segment last summer. But, he was only recently informed that he was selected to appear on the show.

Prendergast created JamStack to help musicians like him who lived in small spaces and didn't have a designated playing area. But, the trained engineer quickly saw the benefit of adding a smartphone connection to create custom sounds, find lesson plans online, and share tunes. Working with Toronto’s Cortex Design, they also added Bluetooth technology, a 10-watt speaker and 8-hour battery life.

JamStack hasn't hit the shelves yet, but it already has a huge following and music industry executives are taking notice. Prendergast raised more than $330,000 and took hundreds of pre-orders on a recent Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. He also won the Startup Launch Pad pitch contest at the Canadian Music Festival in April. His Dragons’ Den appearance in November could make JamStack a household name.

Show producers keep the results of the pitches a tight secret until the segment airs, but they released photos from the taping showing Chris with rock-and-roll investor Michael Wekerle. Wekerle lives in Toronto and recently invested in the historic entertainment venue the El Mocambo.

Prendergast won’t reveal much about his moment with Wekerle, but says he’s tried to have the right attitude from the beginning, “I think if you’ve got a great idea you can really defend, and that fire of reflective confidence in your eye, people believe in you.”

The JamStack is being manufactured in China, and is expected to be available for online sales in February at www.JamStack.io.
