The Science Teacher Who Plans To Save The Electric Guitar

Despite what you may have seen recently, the electric guitar is not dying. While sales may be in decline, one rocker/science teacher says the guitar just needs a 21st century upgrade – and he’s got the perfect solution.

Chris Prendergast believes musicians will learn to love the guitar again once it fits their modern lifestyle that lets them be online all the time. He plans to revolutionize the guitar industry with JamStack, the world’s first attachable guitar amplifier that connects to a smartphone. It’s different from anything on the market because it uses smartphone apps to layer effects, loop on the fly, play backtracks, record and share online.

Weighing just 2-pounds (900 grams), Prendergast’s 10-watt amplifier uses a soft mount to attach to the guitar strap button in seconds. It eliminates wasted time setting up pedals, cords, and amps. Plus, JamStack fits in a guitar bag and runs for 8-hours on a single charge with excellent tone at low volume, letting guitarists jam wherever and whenever they feel inspired.

“This makes for interesting mobile performances, and an amazing ability to write music, record it for later, and share it with the touch of a button. Nothing is faster and more convenient,” Prendergast said.

JamStack works with dozens of third party apps like AmpliTube and AmpKit to add layered effects without wasting time on levels. Back tracks won’t drop out like regular amps, and since the phone is right on the guitar body, guitarists can perform sequined samples, or share music effortlessly. Prendergast also added Bluetooth, so it can double as an ultra-premium speaker or plug into a microphone for karaoke to go.

“We have a lot of people wanting to use them in restaurants and other venues to perform in a mobile setting or walking through crowds,” Prendergast said. “It will be great for interacting with the audience in different settings.”

Prendergast is a science teacher by day, rocker at night formerly with the Toronto band Death Valley Yacht Club. So, it should be no surprise to any guitarist that Prendergast built the JamStack out of frustration of not having a dedicated place to play.

“It took too long to set up my equipment, my amps sounded terrible at lower volumes, they could not handle backing tracks and nothing was portable or ergonomic. I remember thinking I wish all this equipment was already on my guitar,” Prendergast recalls.

A trained engineer, Prendergast first built a custom guitar with 3D printed phone mount and it worked great! After failing to convince his musician friends to let him drill holes in their guitars, he shelved the idea. Fast forward a few years, and Prendergast revisited the JamStack and worked with a design firm to developed a modular unit.

He has since run two successful crowdfunding campaigns, brought in new investors, met with music industry executives, and has dedicated partners who believe in his vision.

JamStack is currently being manufactured and available for pre-sales, with shipping expected in the next few weeks. It’s unclear how much longer the sale prices will continue on the IndieGoGo page, but right now they are offering $50 off retail.
