Sounds Of The Struggle Captured By Lafayette And The New Volcanoes

Baltimore-based pianist and composer, Lafayette Gilchrist, has been a staple on the international Jazz scene for years. From his frequent collaboration and tours around the world with Jazz great David Murray, to his Rock/ Hip-Hop infused concerts with the New Volcanoes, Lafayette is always on the move with many musical projects.

His latest project with the New Volcanoes is “New Urban World Blues.” It is a retelling, through the artist's eyes of the tragic and transformative events of the Baltimore Uprising of 2015. The CD begins with the song “Blues for Freddie Gray.”

Starting slow, with a single piano, the track launches into vocalist Brooks Longs’ soulful inquiry and asks the listener to empathize with Freddie. The rest of the project goes through the events of those 2 weeks, i.e. Freddie's arrest; the corruption of city politics; the teenage riots; the clampdown by police and the occupation by the National Guard. All of these topics are covered in the songs, Blues for Freddie Gray, Temptation Blues, Childs Play, Dark Matter and Curfew Blues.

This is Lafayette Gilchrist's 1st release with Manta Ray Records. For this project, Lafayette teamed up with Baltimore producer Auddio Viddeo (AV). This being his 5th release, Lafayette and the group were looking for a different approach for the new album; and, thought that these songs would benefit from an outside voice and perspective.

AV is the lead producer for Manta Ray Records and has worked with many of the top acts in the Baltimore Hip-Hop scene. Together they produced the EP over the entire period of 2016. The partnership creates a wonderful musical timeline of the events of that spring.

The combination of Acid Jazz with a Hip-Hop sensibility, creates a sound that normally is not associated with the “Live” sound of most Jazz. “The drums are out front and in your face and the effects on the vocals are what I would normally reserve for Hip-Hop and R&B” stated AV. “We tried to paint an audio picture of the mood and of the riots.”

The CD boasts a stellar grouping of some of the best musicians in the Northeast region. Soul singers Navasha Daya and Brooks Long; guitarist Carl Filipiak and trumpet player Mike Cerri, are among some of the highlighted musicians.

The CD contains a final bonus track sung by the youngest member of the group 12 year old Camilla Campos-Cerri. The song “Treasures in Our Futures” ends the CD with a hopeful look forward -- with a nod to the next generation.

The EP is released by Manta Ray Records and will be available worldwide by Orchard distribution on May 26, 2017.
