"For many years, there was only one kind of music allowed in mainland China: 'Red Songs'. Later, there was 'Mainstream Music.' And then I came along, with a new, third sound with self-expression - 'Music with Soul.'" --- Cui Jian, Bejing 2013

The music of seminal Chinese rocker, Cui Jian ("ts-way dj-yen"), will finally be available on international digital platforms. On 16th April, 2013, a new compilation, The 3rd Sound of China, will introduce this iconic artist to the world.

This release will be closely followed by the digital release of his five key albums.

The Beijing-based singer/songwriter, trumpeter, guitarist and producer is regarded as a musical pioneer and often referred to as the "Godfather of Chinese Rock."

In the wake of Chairman Mao's reign, Cui became the voice of a new generation. Caught between the idealism of their socialist upbringing and the country's abandonment of its value system, Cui's honest and multi-layered lyrics addressed sensitive issues – individualism, sexuality and more – and spoke to young Chinese in an unprecedented way. Musically, he was in a league of his own, combining elements of rock, punk, dance, blues, hip hop and jazz with folk and traditional Chinese music. Over the course of his amazing nearly-thirty-year rock'n roll career, in and out of favor with the authorities, he has provided much-needed leadership and inspiration to musicians and citizens alike.

The 3rd Sound of China, an exclusive digital release, features thirteen songs showcasing the musical history of China's most famous rock icon.

Spanning Cui Jian's illustrious and bold musical career, the compilation opens with "Nothing To My Name" (from 1989's Rock and Roll on the New Long March), the song first performed in 1986 that marked the beginning of Chinese rock. The record ends with "Blue Bone" (from 2005's Show You Colour), which lends itself to the title of the forthcoming feature film written and directed by Cui, with cinematography by Christopher Doyle (In The Mood for Love, Hero, etc).

"Cui Jian taught a billion people to rock, and invented yaogun, Chinese rock and roll," says Jonathan Campbell, author of Red Rock: The Long, Strange March of Chinese Rock & Roll. "Cui's example and music embodies the power, potential and promise of rock and roll. It's a crime that the world knows so little of his music and legacy. This compilation should help change that."

The 3rd Sound of China will be available digitally on iTunes and other music services with exclusive streaming on Spotify from 16 April 2013 - with iconic album artwork designed by award winning creative director, Grover Tham.
