New Custom EQ For SAS Mastering
SafeandSound Mastering has recently installed a brand new, custom built equalizer. The equalizer is a stereo stepped switched, 5 band parametric hand built in the UK. Being stereo switched means it is perfect for mastering as both channels are ganged together meaning that it is extremely accurate between the left and right channels. It is a 5 band equalizer with switchable shelf controls in the top and bottom bands and has custom gain controls and filter frequencies. Head mastering engineer Barry Gardner says: "This equalizer has really added something special to the studio, plugs ins cannot compare to a very high end analogue equalizer as they tend to add a 3 dimension quality to the sound and with this custom equalizer there is no exception. The design is based on a very well known USA built equalizer circuit but with mastering modifications. I had the unit built specifically for mastering and it is capable of one of the smoothest high ends boosts I have ever heard, it has only the finest electronic components inside." Equalization is one of the most important tools in a mastering studio environment, it allows the engineer to correct and subjectively enhance the sound of a mix by adjusting the tone in a very specific and accurate way. These equalizers are patched into the mastering equipment chain and the audio is 're-captured' with the adjustments ensuring the music translates well to other sound reproduction systems. Many people like the way analogue equipment enhances the sound quality. Gardner continues: "Ultimately effective equalization decisions are the mainstay of mastering, it's important to have a very linear monitoring system and once you have total trust in your monitoring and acoustics you can make decisions with confidence. This new equalizer is like the icing on the cake. The bottom end on this custom eq is very focused and is capable of both broad and fairly narrow adjustments, in fact it is an equalizer which sounds good in every band having a slightly colored yet fairly clean character. The unit is undoubtedly going to find itself on many music tracks.
