PRS For Music Licenses Google Play's Cloud-Based Music Service

PRS for Music licenses the latest cloud based music service, Google Play launching in Europe this week. Google Play combines a digital music store with a free-to-user cloud based music management service for the consumers' new purchases as well as existing music libraries.

The new pan-European licence means music lovers can make purchases from the Google Play store on their Android devices and add up to 20,000 songs from an existing music collection using 'scan and match' technology to a cloud storage service being offered free to users.

Robert Ashcroft, Chief Executive, PRS for Music said: "Google Play uses cloud technology to offer millions of users an opportunity to enjoy vast music libraries on devices simultaneously. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Google on this genuinely exciting service. It means we can give consumers across Europe another legal platform to discover our music creators' work."

Sami Valkonen, head of international music licensing at Google, commented: "We are excited to be launching our service across Europe this week. Music on Google Play is the first truly cloud-based, free-to-user music service that allows for consumers to have their music libraries available to them from any internet-connected device, and seamlessly synchronised on their Android devices. Google Play makes it easy for users to discover and own even more music through our intuitive interface and cloud locker. It is a whole new way of living with music and technology - and it's free."

In addition to the licensing of thousands of smaller websites, PRS for Music has supported the launch of over 70 fully-licensed online music services and has now licensed a range of cloud services from providers including Amazon, iTunes and 7 Digital, with more to follow in the coming months.
