On May 1st, from 5-8pm, leading figures from the world of academia, education and the music industry will discuss ‘The Future of Musicianship’ at Hub Westminster, London’s superstudio for the new economy.

This roundtable discussion, organised in collaboration with the ‘Loving & Living Music’ project and the Education Foundation, will be a unique event where music educators and music professionals come together to discuss the future of musicianship from the point of view of music education. The discussion will cover what considerations are required for teachers and for students, what is the future of musical careers and whether we are combining studying music and playing music in a way that drives not just technical skills but musical expression and overall musicianship.

Key speakers include:
Tony Whyton, Professor of Jazz & Musical Cultures at Salford University
Peter Lutkoski, President of the Association of International Music Schools & Assistant Principal at the American School in London
Paul Kirkham, Managing Director of Institute of Contemporary Music Performance
Bill Martin, Music Education Manager at Yamaha Music Europe & Manager of the Yamaha Class Band project
Steve Lawson, Professional musician, masterclass-giver, social technology consultant, co-founder of New Music Strategies and Amplified
Simon Purcell, Head of Jazz Department at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance

The event, the first of a range of projects from Loving & Living Music that aim for wider awareness of and open discussion across the world about the importance of musicianship, will also contribute to the debate about the future of music education outlined in the Henley Review and the wider debate about the importance of creativity in education.

The event is open to the public; for further information and for registration contact:
