The Music Producers Guild Adopts Music And The Deaf As Its New Charity

The Music Producers Guild has adopted Music and the Deaf as its official charity and will be actively supporting it by holding fund raising events, including a raffle at its annual Awards ceremony in London.

For the past three years the MPG has supported Don’t Lose the Music, a campaign orchestrated by the RNID, which was recently renamed Action For Hearing Loss.

Richard Lightman, vice chairman of the MPG, says: “Our policy is to review our choice of charity every three years and, following that review, we decided to adopt Music and the Deaf because we were very inspired by its philosophy and by the enthusiasm and dedication of its founder, Paul Whittaker. Our work with RNID helped raise a significant amount of money and we hope to emulate that success on behalf of Music and the Deaf, as well as use our contacts within the industry to help raise the charity’s profile.”

Music and the Deaf (registered UK charity #1000025) aims to help people of all ages and degrees of hearing loss to access and enjoy music and the performing arts. For over 20 years the charity has worked with thousands of people across the UK, researched and written guides to making music with deaf children and given hundreds of talks, signed theatre performances and workshops. The charity has also founded the UK’s first Deaf Youth Orchestra and the Hi-Notes ensemble, which performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008 as part of the Schools Prom. The orchestra, in particular, is groundbreaking as it enables deaf young people to meet regularly and make new friends. They are given the opportunity to take part in orchestral playing with support from an experienced team of both deaf and hearing musicians. Within a year of being set up, the orchestra was premiered at the Venue, Leeds College of Music in Leeds with its own specifically commissioned piece written by renowned composer, David Bedford.

Music and the Deaf was founded in 1988 by Paul Whittaker, who has been deaf all his life. He plays the piano and organ and has also trained choirs. Paul has a music degree from Oxford University, a post-graduate diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, and in 2007 was awarded an OBE for Services to Music. As Music and the Deaf’s Artistic Director, Paul is responsible for the creative and artistic development of the charity. For the past four years he has been very involved in Sing Up, of which Music and the Deaf was a flagship organisation, encouraging people to both sing and sign and creating signed song resources.

Commenting on the new arrangement, Paul Whittaker says: “We are delighted to be associated with the Music Producers Guild and we are now exploring ways in which the two organisations can work together. Fund raising is obviously an important part of any charity’s work, but we are also very keen increase public awareness of the charity and we feel confident that having music industry heavyweights such as the MPG on board will help us do this. One area that we will certainly be exploring is adding to our list of patrons, which already includes James MacMillan, Richard Stilgoe and The Lord Lloyd Webber. We are also looking at the possibility of recording our Deaf Youth Orchestra and bringing their inspirational performances to a wider audience.”
