The 2011 World Copyright Summit commenced yesterday at the Square Brussels Meeting Centre, Brussels, Belgium. This third biennial event, organized by CISAC (the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers and supported by numerous organizations around the world, brings together leading global authorities on copyright and representatives from all aspects of the creative content and distribution system, to discuss the digital future.

The first day highlights were diverse, and included:

Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Digital Agenda said “that the European Commission’s ambition is for Europe to become a leader in the digital economy”.

David Touve, Assistant Professor of Business at the US’ Washington and Lee University, astounded the audience when he concluded that between €25 billion and €64 billion is spent to support the world’s unlicensed Internet content. He then stated, “Creativity isn’t a product, nor is it a service. Creativity is a sensory experience that we all share, something we hear, feel and see. It is also a personal experience; it is a social experience; it is a cultural experience that expresses who we are and what we share; it is also a financial experience for someone to make a living.”

New French online music service Deezer has reached 1.2 million subscribers in just a single year. CEO Axel Dauchez said: “there is definitely a momentum, because now the services are delivering real value around the content.”

Carlo d'Asaro Biondo, Google Vice President for Southern and Eastern Europe, MEA, declared: “The web is not yet a mirror of the world’s cultural riches. 46% of web content is in English; we can’t afford to live in a world that will end up looking Anglo-American.” He added: “We want to work with creators to help them reach new audiences and monetise their content. Work with us to do that and help us preserve the world’s cultural heritage.”

Croatian President and composer Ivo Josipovic explained how a healthy, diverse cultural market is central to his mandate and how it forms part of Croatia’s application to become part of the EU. “My country is in transition to a European Country and I am in transition from being a musician to a president,” he noted. About his campaign slogan “New Justice”, he said, “The slogan was meant for our society while facing problems,” he stressed, “But, it also applies to attitudes towards intellectual property, that is, pay and support the artist and all cultural activities.” [blog entry here : http://www.copyrightsummit.com/2011/06/07/croatian-president-ivo-josipovic-closes-first-day-of-wcs-sessions/]
