NEUMANN MICS SHINE AT MOHEGAN SUN

OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT: Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut is expanding their Neumann microphone collection to include four KMS 105s and two U 87As. This is in addition to the two Neumann TLM 103s, six KM 184s and two KM 185s microphones currently used on the main stage.

The Mohegan Sun was created by the Mohegan Tribe of Native Americans in 1996, and is known as one of the largest casinos in North America. Today, the casino complex boasts over 179,000 square feet of gaming space, a half dozen shops, 20 restaurants, a 3,000 square foot children's space and its own gas station. The size of the casino complex will double upon completion of the nearly one billion dollar expansion. This two-phase plan with a completion date of 2002 is the largest private construction project on the East Coast.

Three separate venues fulfill the live entertainment needs of patrons, collectively boasting an endless line of national and high caliber acts from all entertainment genres. The Wolf Den lies literally at the heart of the casino and offers entertainment seven days a week in an intimate setting for approximately 350. It hosts a diversity of performers - ranging from Roger McGuinn, to the B52s and Alice Cooper, and it's free to the casino patrons. The Events Center doubles as a bingo hall and 1,500-seat entertainment venue while the Uncas Pavilion is a 5,000-seat temporary facility with full rigging capabilities. Hosting full-scale productions - Kiss and Don Henley, Clint Black and Martina McBride among others - the Pavilion will be replaced by the 10,000-seat Mohegan Arena slated for completion in fall 2001.

Frank Pavlich, the lead audio technician at Mohegan Sun provides planning, implementation and operation protocols for the entire facilities' diverse audio needs. Directing a crew of four full-time and two on-call audio technicians working in all three facilities requires that everyone on the staff wear many hats. According to Eugene "Gino" Mulcahy one of FOH engineers for all three venues, Mohegan Sun is very aggressive in scheduling diverse national acts to appeal to a younger casino crowd. With a discerning audience and acts requiring the highest standards, Neumann microphones have become an integral audio tool for the casino.

"I wanted the staff engineers to start thinking along the lines of more elite types of audio equipment," according to Pavlich. Many times visiting engineers come in with a 'more of the same' attitude and are very surprised to find Neumann mics in a casino. These engineers leave and talk to other venues and engineers about the great experience they just had at Mohegan Sun.

Another factor that lead to Mohegan Sun acquiring a 'collection' of Neumann microphones is the planning and growth of their video department and recording studio. "These Neumann mics are what you would expect to find in a video/recording environment. I couldn't imagine a studio with them,' concluded Pavlich.

While the four new Neumann KMS 105s will not be incorporated into the sound system until the end of this year, all of the engineers at Mohegan Sun are thoroughly familiar with their performance. "Rob Treloar, at Neumann, brought a couple of 105s down during the beta testing phase allowing us to put them to the test," noted Gino Mulcahy. "I found the 105 to be the best handheld condenser I have ever used." He went on to add that during the "test" period visiting acts using in-ear monitoring loved the ease with which they could stay "on mic" and the consistently uncolored sound of the 105.

According to Mohegan Sun staff engineers, another Neumann mic, the TLM 103 is the best value in a large diaphragm mic. They say artists and visiting engineers are surprised when we put the 103s on a 4x12 or 4x10 cabinet. The results: incredibly present guitar sound. Just pad it, pull a little room noise out with a high pass filter and you have the great guitar sound without touching the EQ.

It doesn't take long in speaking to the engineers to hear the recurring theme of "presence" and "uncolored" sound regarding Neumann microphones. All agreed that their job is to make sure the performance of every artist reaches the audience uncolored and they can rely on Neumann mics to consistently deliver a natural re-representation of the source.

Neumann's award winning line of microphones has set the standard in the industry since 1928. In 1999, Neumann received the prestigious Technical Grammy(r) for their 70 years of innovation in microphone design and contribution to the music industry. A continuing commitment to provide innovative, technically refined products and engineering solutions of proven quality ensures that Neumann's stature will remain unassailable.
