Canada's Breithaupt Brothers - Don (composer) and Jeff (lyricist) won the first prize of the Jazz category in the 15th Annual USA Songwriting Competition. Both brothers are accomplished songwriters in their own right. Don received an Emmy award for outstanding original song in 2009 for co-writing a song to TV series "6teen". He has also co-wrotten three songs that were nominated for Juno awards. He and Jeff hosted regular revue of their songs at New York City's Public Theater. Past performers include Tony Award-winners James Naughton and LaChanze, multiple Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara, Denzal Sinclaire, Kate McGarry, Catherine Russell, Rebecca Martin, Norm Lewi, among many others. Their songs have been featured on Showtime's The L Word and have been recorded by Brent Carver, Dione Taylor, Adi Braun, Rikki Rumball, and Lorraine Lawson. Seeing Stars, a musical about boxers in Depression-era New York (with songs by the Breithaupt Brothers and book by Shelley McPherson), had its world premiere earlier this month as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, where it enjoyed a critically acclaimed, sold-out run.

Past USA Songwriting Competition winners that have gone on to win Grammy awards include: Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxler who won first prize in the Children's catgeory of the USA Songwriting 2004 and won a Grammy in 2005. Current top winner of the USA Songwriting Competition, Alannah Myles won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance in 1991.

USA Songwriting Competition has a long history of having winners getting success, recording and publishing contracts, have their songs placed on the charts as well as having their songs placed on film and television. 2009 First Prize winner (country category) Kyler Engalnd was signed to Universal Records. 2005 First Prize winner (Pop) Kate Voegele was signed to Interscope Records the year after she won and had her winning song hit top 40 on the Billboard Charts, her latest album hit Top 10 on the Billboard 200 Album charts this summer. 2007 Overall Grand Prize Winner Ari Gold had his winning song “Where The Music Takes You” hit #10 on the Billboard Dance Charts. Judges include A&R managers from the "big 4" record companies such as Warner, EMI, Universal and SONY Music.
