Does New Music always necessarily have to produce something new? That is the question Klangspuren essayist Wolfgang Loeckle will ask conductor Alexander Liebreich on the final day of this year’s festival. Whatever the case, it is always necessary for New Music to be presented in a fresh, new way – this is demonstrated clearly in the work of KLANGSPUREN Schwaz Tirol, whose aim is to uncompromisingly vouch for the quality of the performance conditions of New Music and to undogmatically continue to expand and improve the framework of the festival each year. This year’s highlights range from the annual “peregrine” concerts, to an excursion into the fascinating world of mushrooms with composer Friedrich Cerha (Sep 12), to the opening of the festival with the concert performance of FRANZISKUS by the Russian composer Sergej Newski (Sep 09), which will be held for the first time in the Franciscan Church of Schwaz.

Russia's New Music is also a thematic focus of the 17th edition of the KLANGSPUREN Festival – with a minor focus on the most current developments in the Swiss contemporary music scene, some aspects of Tyrolean and Austrian contemporary music, and guests from Munich.

Russia's contemporary music scene will emerge as a many-voiced reality determined by the positions of three generations. Edison Denissow and Valentin Silvestrov are considered the founders of a semi-official Soviet avant-garde, which was able to shape musical positions despite its separation from European developments and the ongoing attempts of propagandistic usurpation. Vladimir Tarnopolski belongs to a second generation that made substantial contributions in opening up and professionalizing Russia’s contemporary music. Sergej Newski, Olga Rayeva and the composers of the concert with Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble are part of the most recent and active group of Russian composers, some of whom have also organized themselves as the Structural Resistance Group (StRes). These different positions in Russian contemporary music are reflected in the concert with the Ensemble Modern on Sep 10.

As far as KLANGSPUREN is concerned, however, the term NEW always also stands for new and up-and-coming performers; this refers not only the debut concerts with the young Asasello Quartett (Sep 23) or the internationally established Collegium Novum Zürich (Sep 16), but above all also to the International Ensemble Modern Academy that has meanwhile become a main feature of the Klangspuren Festival. The members from all over the world face a special challenge this year: Heinz Holliger as composer in residence, oboist, instructor, and conductor will demand utmost concentration and maximal performance from these talented young musicians and show the unusual power of the spark of contemporary music that is capable of leaping from one generation to the next. This can be heard clearly in three concerts with Academy members – one of which will be played with the renowned Latvian Radio Choir (Sep 11 and 12).

What is special about KLANGSPUREN are the many details of its programming, for example the work of the Tyrolean drum group The Next Step with familiar sounds by Sofia Gubaidulina and Mark Pekarskij, or the confrontation between author Vladimir Sorokin and composer Olga Rayeva, or the literary-musical tunnel exploration – as part of a matinee in a safety tunnel of the new Unterinntaltrasse – with a reading by the author Barbara Hundegger and performance by saxophonist Christoph Reiserer, not to mention the cinema-musical combination with the world premiere of Dmitri Kourliandski’s music for Aelita based on the silent movie Aelita – Queen of Mars (1924) by Yakov Protazanov (Sep 24).

Contemporary music in the Tyrol is represented this year by the zither virtuoso Martin Mallaun, who will be playing not only a solo concert (Sep 12) but also a concert with the Orchester der Akademie St. Blasius (Sep 25). The latter concert features a world premiere by Franz Baur (commissioned by the city of Innsbruck). Another world premiere will also be presented by the composer himself, Christof Dienz, who will be performing with Ensemble Quadrat:sch Extended feat. Zeena Parkins (Sep 21).

The 'peregrine' concerts, which over the years have become a tradition, will take place this year under the expert direction of Peter Lindenthal and follow a route from Scharnitz to Telfs. The final concert will be held in St. Jacobs Cathedral in Innsbruck. The program, which features, among others, soprano Natalia Pschenitschnikova, who will also be performing a new piece by Vadim Karassikov, will specifically address the festival focus: Russia. Cellist Anja Lechner, who will not only be accompanying Pschenitschnikova, but also performing as a soloist, is one of our special guests from Munich.

And to make sure one thing is clear from the start: KLANGSPUREN’s philosophy is not one of coercion; rather, it seeks to provide the conditions for allowing the most diverse and fascinating – at least in our opinion – encounters with the music of our day!

The KLANGSPUREN Festival of Contemporary Music 2010 will be presenting 18 world premieres and 6 Austrian premieres.
