SALLY ZITO NAMED AS LOS ANGELES WOMEN IN MUSIC COMET AWARD WINNER FOR BEST SONGWRITER/PERFORMER OF 2008-2009
Website: http://www.sallyzito.com LOS ANGELES, CA (June 30, 2009) – Sally Zito, the daughter of Nat King Cole’s legendary arranger/composer Joseph Zito, has been selected to receive Los Angeles Women in Music’s (LAWIM) Comet Award as the best songwriter/performer of 2008-2009. She will accept the honor on Wednesday, July 8 when she and her band, The Sally Zito Project, headline LAWIM’s monthly Soiree at the M Bar in Hollywood. Zito began her musical career began at age 4 with classical piano concerts, and moved into jazz improvisation and performance with several professional bands, including as a drummer for a heavy metal cover band. She initially tried her hand at composing while studying orchestration and arrangement with her father. After receiving her formal music training at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Zito spent four years learning from and working with Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated film composer, the late Michael Kamen (Lethal Weapon, Mr. Holland's Opus, X-Men,etc),as his assistant in his Los Angeles management office. She was then introduced to the Los Angeles musical scene by multiplatinum songwriter/recording artist and LAWIM Soiree host Harriet Schock, (“That Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady”, “First Time on a Ferris Wheel”). In recent years, Ms. Zito and her band have toured the United States and appeared at charity benefits alongside other notable artists as Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, Tony Maiden of Rufus and Chaka Kahn, Howard Scott of War, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Robbie Dupree ("Steal Away"), and the legendary Eddie Money where she performed alongside her brother Barry, a starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Additionally she has worked with Grammy and Oscar-nominated recording artist Stephen Bishop ("Separate Lives", "It Might Be You"). Her debut jazz-inflected CD, “Cheap and Alive,” was released in 2008. Asked about what inspired her work, she says, “This CD is drawn from people and life stories I’ve noticed along the way. The title track chronicles a teen growing up in Las Vegas and trying to be accepted, but looking to all the wrong role models. I think that speaks to a lot of the girls growing up today, anywhere in the world. The girls are thinking that who they are is not enough and they compare themselves to characters in music videos and TV. They feel, in order to be truly alive, they need to look and act cheap, rather than just learning to love who they are.” ABOUT LAWIM: Established in 1986, Los Angeles Women in Music (LAWIM) is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to fostering equal opportunity for women and men in the music industry and to promoting the advancement of women through empowerment, support, education, encouragement and recognition of their achievements.
