Bertelsmann Mourns The Death Of Monti Lüftner

Bookmark and Share

Bertelsmann is mourning the death of Monti Lüftner, a former Member of the Executive Board. The music manager, who had been closely associated with Bertelsmann for decades, died on Thursday after being severely injured in a tragic traffic accident in Munich. Monti (Egmont) Lüftner was 77 years old.

Bertelsmann's post-war founder, Reinhard Mohn, and his wife, Liz, are deeply shocked about the death of their friend. "Monti Lüftner will be part of the history of our company forever. He was a much-appreciated adviser and good friend to us all. We are mourning the loss of a great man."

Gunter Thielen, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bertelsmann AG, added: "With the passing of Monti Lüftner the music world has lost one of its outstanding representatives. Bertelsmann and music – this connection was inseparably linked with his name. He left his mark on Bertelsmann and Ariola for almost half a century."

Hartmut Ostrowski, Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann AG, emphasized Monti Lüftner's extraordinary entrepreneurial skills: "Monti Lüftner knew better than almost anyone how to merge artistic creativity and entrepreneurial skills in such a successful way. He continued to provide consulting to myself and the group until the last. He will be greatly missed."

Monti Lüftner was born on November 12, 1931. His love for music was a red thread that ran through his life. He learned to play the piano when he was a young boy. After passing his graduation exams in Graz in 1949 he moved to the Austrian capital to study during the 1950s. While Lüftner was studying at the Academy for Global Trade, he organized student bands in his free time and booked gigs for them at various clubs. In 1956 he graduated from the academy with honors.

Three years later he established Ariola Schallplatten GmbH in Austria for Bertelsmann. In 1964 he was appointed Managing Director of the Ariola-Eurodisc Musikproduktion in Munich. Under his aegis the stable of artist that included Peter Alexander, Udo Jürgens, Rex Gildo, Mireille Mathieu, and Heintje continued to grow. One year later, stars like Michael Holm and The Hollies signed with the Munich record company. Three years later, Lüftner took over the general direction of the foreign subsidiaries of Ariola-Eurodisc in addition to his other responsibilities. In 1969, Bertelsmann moved the Ariola distribution from Gütersloh to Munich, where Monti Lüftner and Friedel Schmidt held the company's fate in their hands.

In 1972, Monti Lüftner became Director of the Bertelsmann Music division, and in 1976 of the expanded corporate division Music/Film/Television. He became a Member of the Bertelsmann Executive Board in 1977. In that same year, Boney M. conquered the charts throughout the world. Without Lüftner, their rise would not have been possible. In 1987, the Bertelsmann Music Group was established with Lüftner in the position of Co-Chairman. At the age of 60, he left Bertelsmann as Vice Chairman/President of Artist & Repertoire and CEO/President of BMG in the German-speaking region after having worked with the company for 36 years.
