CHANGING MODES GIVE THE LOW-“DOWN” ON THEIR NEW CD; DOWN AND OUT IN SHANGRI-LA RELEASED ON MAY 6, 2008

New York’s CHANGING MODES have announced the official digital release date of their third full length album Down and Out In Shangri-La. The new disc has been available at live shows since April, but as of May 6, 2008 fans will be able to download the album from online retailers like iTunes, eMusic and Rhapsody.

To reward patient fans outside the New York area who have waited almost two years between new material, CHANGING MODES will make available the lead single “Shangri-la” as a free download for the week (until April 25th) on their MySpace page, www.myspace.com/changingmodes. The song is based on the life of convicted and jailed teenage murderer Kip Kinkle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kip_Kinkle).
Another track from Down and Out In Shangri-La, “Ship,” is now in rotation on XM radio’s “Radar Report.”

CHANGING MODES is an alternative art-rock band in the vein of the B-52s and the Dresden Dolls. The songs by co-lead songwriters Wendy Griffiths and Yuzuru Sadashige hyperactively voyage through multiple time signatures and moods over the album’s 34 minutes. CHANGING MODES’ talented and versatile drummer David Oromaner anchors the ten tracks with complex rhythm patterns. Down and Out In Shangri-La marks the recorded debut for lead singer Camille Atkinson with CHANGING MODES. Out lesbian Atkinson, or the “Tattooed Nanny” as she proclaimed on stage at a recent show, has a profound, brassy voice that ranges from bright soprano all the way to dirty Big Mama Thornton, sometimes within the same song.

Down and Out In Shangri-La was engineered by industry notable Ted Spencer (David Bowie, Roberta Flack, Shawn Colvin) and features 10 original tracks including title track “Shangri-La,” “Blue Tomorrow,” inspired by the David Lynch film Inland Empire, and “Race the Wave” described by Griffiths as “a metaphor for living in New York City in the ‘new economy.’” The sound of this CD recalls a musical freedom similar to Blondie, where songs glide though genres as diverse as rock, Dixieland, rap and classical. Note that songs from Down and Out in Shangri-La are presently in regular rotation at Moozikoo Radio (www.moozikooradio.com) and Harris Radio (www.harrisradio.com).
