Through Illness Comes A Celebration Of Music: In Website And Book Form
(Albany, New York) January 3, 2008 -- Since first writing a myriad of features and pop-culture articles for his own Aftertaste Magazine (music and music culture) four years ago, author Joseph Schaefer has matured and learned so much about writing and his own process he felt compelled to release the material as a collection of favorite interviews, reviews and personal thoughts about culture and the anomalies of pop-culture. The addition of a new website to the music-infused book's life is the next step to sharing the stories of the bands and characters that flooded the music magazine. When the first edition of the book, What's Next?, hit the publishing world and general public Schaefer immediately came face to face with health issues within his close-knit family. A year later and a year of re-thought brought Schaefer to this juncture in the book’s life. Schaefer took advantage of the opportunity to improve his earlier work. The result is a completely re-designed cover (front / back) and some editorial tweaks in terms of layout. “It feels and looks like a completely new book. I absolutely love the revised edition and feel like it is the book I was determined to write,” Schaefer said. “If I said I was completely content with the first edition of the book, I’d be telling a lie. This version feels much more complete and I cannot wait for not only the artists who were involved to get a hold of it, but for anyone who was a fan of the original Aftertaste Magazine or music in general. Although some of the material is dated, it is always nice for music and culture lovers to take a look back. Plus, it might spur some renewed interest or start the foundation for a journey into discovery.” In the book’s collective nature, Schaefer covers ground on topics such as the video generation of MTV viewers, caffeine addiction in American culture, as well as providing a ‘take with you anywhere’ text version of features and interviews (of such acts as Baltimore’s Lake Trout, England’s Fingathing, New York’s Sirsy, Brooklyn’s by-way-of-Israel Emok and much more). The bonus to the book is the hearty updates in terms of 'What’s Next?' for a few of the artists featured in the original articles. When Schaefer first penned the articles he was determined to be the small-town boy who reached out to the international arts community. His work with Aftertaste was read by upwards of 30,000 eager readers during the hey-day of the magazine. He often wondered how this ‘guy from out of nowhere’ was suddenly having in-depth conversations with artistic luminaries such as Jack Irons (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam), Kerry King (Slayer) and award-wining independent director Steve Balderson (Pep Squad, Firecracker, Phone Sex). “To say I've grown tremendously as a writer since those days is an understatement. I've certainly matured as a person and a family man, but I never discontinued my study of the craft. Those personal aspects have had an effect on my style, content and outlook on writing. I've learned so much about the art of writing since I've begun working with different artists from across North America. Learning the craft will be a lifelong adventure,” Schaefer said. Schaefer hopes to bring his book to many outlets that foster the independent arts, not just book stores. Perhaps a mini-tour of the northeast will come into play; however, Schaefer is putting a lot of focus on his career in music as well as in the realm of writing.
