WFUV's Vin Scelsa To Be Honored With The ASCAP Deems Taylor Award

Bookmark and Share

WFUV host Vin Scelsa will receive the 2007 ASCAP Deems Taylor Radio Broadcast Award for outstanding coverage of music on his long-running show Idiot's Delight. In recognizing Scelsa, ASCAP stated, "Vin Scelsa, a mainstay of New York radio for four decades, is one of the last true free-form radio hosts. He is a sharp raconteur, a champion of new and unusual music and, with his devoted listening public, an important tastemaker."  An iconic figure in New York radio, Scelsa will be honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers at a reception on Thursday, December 13 at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room.

Scelsa receives the Deems Taylor Radio Broadcast Award in his 40th year on the air as one of New York City's most respected radio hosts. To mark the anniversary, Scelsa, who began his career at WFMU in November 1967 with his pioneering free-form program The Closet, has invited some of the people who have worked with him on Idiot's Delight to join him in the studio on Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 PM EST. Guests will include former K-ROCK and WNEW producer Kara Manning, WFUV music director Rita Houston, WFUV producer Kim Ferdinando and Sirius Satellite Radio Disorder Channel program director (and former WFUV on-air host) Meg Griffin. The program will air on WFUV (90.7 FM and wfuv.org).

"These women were and are all very important in my career. I'm grateful to them and the many other programmers and producers I've worked with for giving me the freedom and autonomy to continue working in free-form radio. They take a risk on me and, in turn, I get to take risks with the music I feature on the show," says Scelsa, who has been praised by the New York Times for a career of "[standing up] for consumerism as a personal choice rather than the result of corporate influence, and for the right of artists to avoid compromise."  Idiot's Delight is revered as one of the few radio destinations where the playing field is leveled and new artists receive the same respect, encouragement and air time as their established counterparts.

Scelsa has worked in the city for his entire radio career: At WFMU (1967-1969), WBAI (1969-1970), WABC-FM / WPLJ (1970-71), WNEW-FM (1973-1982; music director, 1975-76) and the years 1985 to 1996 saw the birth of 'Idiot's Delight' on WXRK. In 1996 Vin returned to his old home at WNEW-FM, where Idiot's Delight continued on Sunday nights until the end of 2000. In February 2001 he returned to public radio - at WFUV 90.7 FM - where he continues to broadcast his very unique program, still a free-flowing mix of music, monologue, live performance and interviews with a wide variety of guests. Throughout the years, Vin has engaged talents including Yoko Ono, Leonard Cohen, Rick Moody, Elvis Costello, the late Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Stoppard in conversations about their own crafts as well as other subjects.

A unique presenter of music from a wide array of genres, Scelsa is as well known for his topical musings as he is for his diverse and influential musical tastes. His in-depth interviews with musical guests ranging from Norah Jones to Tom Waits and literary luminaries like Paul Auster and Pete Hamill go beyond the usual "promo tour" fare. Listening to Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight is like eavesdropping on an intimate visit between friends, complete with impromptu studio performances.
