Tom Long Elected President Of GMIA
Website: http://www.gmia.org Atlanta, GA • August 1, 2012 Tom Long has been elected as president of the Georgia Music Industry Association (GMIA). In 1978, Long co-founded the Atlanta Songwriter’s Association (ASA) which became GMIA in 1986. After a 30-year career in Nashville, he returned to his hometown of Kennesaw, Georgia, and is again immersing himself in his home state’s music industry. The ASA co-founders — Long, entertainment attorney Steven Weaver, and Larry Latimer — formed the association with the help of then Lt. Governor Zell Miller and Bill Lowery. “In 1978, we saw a need to join forces as songwriters to help create a vehicle to get our songs heard by the professionals,” Long said. “With the help of Bill Lowery, we were able to get major producers and publishers from Nashville to listen to our members and attend showcases. As our membership grew stronger, so did our songs, and soon several of our members had publishing deals and went on to great success. People like Tom Douglas (The House That Built Me — Miranda Lambert), Doug Johnson (Three Wooden Crosses — Randy Travis), and many others. With the success of the ASA/GMIA, Long was hired in 1981 by Tree Publishing Company (now known as Sony/ATV Music) to become their professional manager and was instrumental in many of their hits such as Ring On Her Finger, Time On Her Hands and Somebody’s Gonna Love You (Lee Greenwood) and Common Man (John Conlee). In 1984, Long was lured away from Tree by ASCAP (American Society of Authors, Composers & Publishers) to be Director of Membership where he signed over 800 writers and exposed Brad Paisley’s music abilities to Music Row. Anne Murray came calling in 1994 and Tom ran her publishing company for 6 years and was the first to hire then unknown Blake Shelton as a tape copy person. Tom returned to Sony/ATV Music for 5 years as catalog manager prior to returning to Kennesaw, Georgia, to take care of his mother and spend time with his grandchildren. Long was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000 with Vern Gosdin; and is a graduate of Kennesaw State and Georgia State University with degrees in Commercial Music for Recording/Publishing and Business Management. Currently he’s the chairman of the Gospel Hall of Fame Committee in Nashville and a consultant to the Musician’s Hall of Fame. Tom Long said about his goals for GMIA, “It is my goal as president of GMIA, to bring back a much stronger focus to the business of songwriting and to facilitate professional and financially rewarding relationships between Georgia songwriters and the greater world of music entertainment.” For more information, please contact: Angela Durden at 404-358-0951 or angeladurden@msn.com www.GMIA.org
